Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Arrival in Kigali

Your 10 Day Uganda Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari begins at Kigali International Airport. Meet your private guide and transfer to your selected city hotel. Depending on arrival time, spend the remainder of the day relaxing or exploring selected attractions in Kigali.

An overnight stay in the capital allows you to recover before the road journey into Uganda.

    Main Destination: Kigali

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

Kigali City Experience – Transfer to Uganda

After breakfast, enjoy a short guided Kigali experience. The Kigali Genocide Memorial can be included for travelers interested in Rwanda's history, while other stops may focus on culture, art or markets. Later, leave Kigali and travel toward the Uganda border.

The drive reveals Rwanda's green hills and increasingly dramatic Virunga landscapes. Complete immigration formalities before continuing into southwestern Uganda. Travel toward your gorilla trekking region and check into your lodge.

    Main Destination: Volcanoes National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation Options

  3. Day 03

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

After an early breakfast, transfer to the appropriate trekking briefing point. Park personnel explain gorilla trekking regulations and allocate guests to habituated families. You then enter the forest with an authorized guide and trackers.

    Gorilla Trekking Experience

The route depends on where the gorillas are located. Some treks are relatively manageable, while others require several hours of walking across steep and muddy terrain. Porters are strongly recommended.

Once trackers locate your assigned gorilla family, approach according to the ranger's instructions. You may encounter a huge silverback, adult females, juveniles and infants. Observing their behavior at close range is entirely different from watching wildlife from a vehicle.

After the regulated viewing period, trek back and return to your lodge. Spend the afternoon resting.

  4. Day 04

    Additional Gorilla Region Experience

A ten-day safari provides room for another experience in the highlands. Depending on the park and available permits, options can include:

    • Golden monkey tracking
    • Second gorilla trek
    • Community experience
    • Nature walk
    • Scenic Virunga outing
    • Relaxation at your lodge

This flexible day allows the itinerary to be shaped around your interests.

  5. Day 05

    Transfer Toward Wildlife Country

After breakfast, leave the gorilla region and begin your journey toward a savannah wildlife park. One popular Uganda routing connects the gorilla highlands with Queen Elizabeth National Park. The transition from steep mountain forest to open savannah is one of the most attractive aspects of a Uganda safari.

Depending on your route, there may be opportunities to travel through areas associated with tree-climbing lions or enjoy scenic views over the Rift Valley landscape. Arrive at your lodge and relax.

Main Destination: Queen Elizabeth National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation Options

  6. Day 06

    Full-Day Wildlife Safari

Start early for a major day of game viewing. Your guide will explore productive habitats in search of wildlife. Species can include:

Lions and leopards may also occur in the selected park. Because wildlife is free-ranging, sightings vary each day. Experienced guides use knowledge of recent movements, habitat and animal behavior to improve your chances.

Return to your lodge for meals and relaxation between activities where the schedule permits.

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation Options

    Same as previous day

  7. Day 07

    Game Drive and Boat Safari

Begin with another wildlife drive or a relaxed morning depending on the previous day's program. Later, where the selected park offers a suitable water-based activity, join a boat safari.

    Boat Safari Experience

Boat excursions are among the most relaxing ways to observe wildlife. Hippos may be seen resting in the water, while crocodiles can occur along the shoreline. Elephants, buffaloes and antelopes sometimes approach water to drink.

Waterbirds are abundant, making the excursion valuable for birders as well as general safari travelers. After the boat safari, return to your lodge.

Main Destination: Queen Elizabeth National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation Options

    Same as previous day

  8. Day 08

    Additional Wildlife or Primate Experience

Use this day for another game drive, chimpanzee activity or selected forest experience depending on the national parks included. This flexibility is one of the major advantages of choosing ten days. Travelers interested primarily in wildlife can spend more time on game drives.

Primate enthusiasts may add an appropriate chimpanzee excursion. Photographers can use the extra time to revisit productive wildlife areas under different light conditions. Overnight in the selected safari region.

    Main Destination: Kibale National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation Options

  9. Day 09

    Return Toward Rwanda

After breakfast, begin the journey back toward Rwanda. Your guide will plan suitable stops for meals and rest. Complete border procedures and continue into Rwanda.

Depending on the preferred schedule, travel directly to Kigali or overnight at a convenient location before the final day. This staged return reduces the pressure of trying to reach an international flight after a long cross-border journey.

    Main Destination: Kigali

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  10. Day 10

    Kigali – Departure

Enjoy breakfast and your final morning of the safari. If your flight leaves later, additional Kigali sightseeing, shopping or dining can be arranged. Your private guide transfers you to Kigali International Airport at the appropriate time.

This concludes your 10 Day Uganda Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari.

Why Combine Gorilla Trekking and Wildlife Viewing?

The two experiences are fundamentally different. Gorilla trekking takes place on foot inside mountain rainforest. The focus is one habituated family and the intimate details of primate behavior. Game drives cover much larger areas and involve searching for many different species across open habitats.

Combining both provides a more complete East African safari. You can experience the quiet forest environment one day and watch elephants or lions on open plains only a few days later.

    Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is Uganda's principal mountain gorilla destination. Its multiple trekking sectors mean accommodation must be matched carefully with the permit location. Bwindi's forest is steep, ancient and exceptionally biodiverse.

Visitors come primarily for gorillas, but the forest and surrounding highlands are attractions in their own right.

    Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga provides another excellent Uganda gorilla trekking option. Located in the Virunga Mountains, it has spectacular volcanic scenery and important golden monkey habitat. Its proximity to Rwanda makes it particularly convenient for itineraries beginning or ending in Kigali.

    Wildlife Viewing

The 10 day uganda rwanda gorilla & wildlife safari can include a selection of East Africa's classic mammals. Exact sightings depend on the park and natural animal movements. Potential wildlife includes elephants, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, warthogs, baboons and predators.

Birdlife is also exceptional throughout Uganda and Rwanda.

    Gorilla Trekking Permits

Every trekker requires a valid gorilla permit. Permits are limited, date-specific and linked to a trekking location. Advance booking is strongly recommended.

The permit should be confirmed before selecting a lodge because the trekking sector determines the most practical accommodation. Current permit rates and policies should always be verified when booking.

Good to Know

Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.

Best Time for the Safari

This cross-border safari can be undertaken throughout the year. Relatively dry periods are popular because forest trails may be easier and savannah wildlife can be more concentrated around water. Wetter periods bring green landscapes, excellent birding and atmospheric forest conditions.

Rain remains possible year-round in mountain gorilla habitats.

What to Pack

Because this safari includes rainforest and savannah, pack for both. Useful items include:

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long trekking trousers
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Rain jacket
  • Trekking gloves
  • Gaiters
  • Lightweight safari clothing
  • Warm layer
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Sun protection
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera and spare batteries
  • Binoculars
  • Daypack
  • Refillable water bottle

Accommodation

The safari can be arranged at budget, mid-range or luxury level. Mountain lodges should be selected according to the gorilla trekking sector. Savannah park accommodation should provide convenient access to game-drive routes and boat activities.

It is possible to combine categories—for example, using mid-range accommodation for most nights and upgrading around the gorilla park.

Cross-Border Planning

Uganda and Rwanda have separate entry requirements. Travelers should check current visa, passport and health documentation requirements according to nationality. Enough time should be allocated for immigration procedures.

Avoid planning an international flight too close to the expected end of a long cross-border transfer.

Who Should Choose This Safari?

The itinerary works especially well for:

  • First-time East Africa travelers
  • Couples and honeymooners
  • Wildlife photographers
  • Primate enthusiasts
  • Solo travelers
