Uganda Gorilla Permits: Prices, Booking and Availability

Uganda gorilla permits are required for travelers planning to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The permit is the foundation of a Uganda gorilla safari.

It determines the date of your trek and, particularly in Bwindi, influences where you should stay. For this reason, the permit should usually be arranged before non-refundable accommodation is finalized. Uganda is one of the world's premier mountain gorilla destinations and offers the additional advantage of combining gorilla trekking with chimpanzees, savannah wildlife and other safari experiences. However, successful planning depends on understanding how the permit system works.

Where Are Uganda Gorilla Permits Used?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is the country's main gorilla trekking destination. It protects an extensive mountainous rainforest and has multiple trekking areas. This is extremely important when arranging accommodation. A permit associated with one part of Bwindi should not automatically be paired with a lodge in another distant part of the forest.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga lies within the Virunga landscape in southwestern Uganda. Its scenery is characterized by volcanic mountains and montane forest. The park provides another opportunity for mountain gorilla trekking and can be incorporated into itineraries that also feature golden monkeys or other attractions in southwestern Uganda.

Uganda has two mountain gorilla trekking destinations.

How Much Is a Uganda Gorilla Permit?

Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced special low-season pricing during April, May and November 2026. Under the official notice, gorilla tracking during these months is listed at US$600 for foreign non-residents and US$500 for foreign residents.

UWA has also announced revised standard tariffs effective 1 January 2027. Gorilla tracking is listed at:

- US$800 for foreign non-residents - US$700 for foreign residents - US$500 for Rest of Africa visitors - UGX300,000 for East African citizens

The same announcement lists separate charges for the gorilla habituation experience. Tariffs can change, so the applicable price should always be verified for your actual trekking date before payment.

Why Uganda Gorilla Permit Prices Matter

The permit is normally one of the largest fixed costs within a Uganda gorilla safari. However, it is not the complete safari price. You also need to budget for transportation, accommodation, meals, guide services and any additional activities.

A three-day road safari will therefore cost more than the permit alone. A longer itinerary incorporating Kibale, Queen Elizabeth National Park or Murchison Falls will naturally cost more because it includes additional nights, transportation and activities.

When comparing quotations, confirm whether the permit is already included in the total.

Who Manages Uganda Gorilla Permits?

Gorilla trekking permits are managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the government body responsible for Uganda's national parks and wildlife conservation areas. UWA establishes permit tariffs, reservation procedures and trekking regulations.

Its published guidelines state that foreign non-resident gorilla and chimpanzee tracking permits are purchased through tour operators licensed by the Uganda Tourism Board.

For international safari travelers, arranging the permit through a licensed operator also has practical advantages because the operator can coordinate the correct trekking location with accommodation and transportation.

How to Book Uganda Gorilla Permits

Begin with your intended trekking date. If your international flights are already booked, send the complete travel dates to your safari planner. Permit availability can then be checked before the detailed itinerary is finalized.

Once a suitable permit is available, the booking can be confirmed under the current Uganda Wildlife Authority procedures. After the trekking location is confirmed, accommodation should be selected to match it. This sequence is safer than confirming a Bwindi lodge first and searching for a compatible permit afterwards.

Uganda's Full-Payment Booking Requirement

Uganda changed an important part of its permit reservation system in 2026. UWA suspended the previous seven-day reservation window effective 1 March 2026. Under the updated system, permits are secured upon full payment when they are booked rather than being held temporarily without payment.

This means travelers should be ready to confirm when suitable permit availability has been identified. Availability can change, particularly for popular trekking periods.

An itinerary proposal should therefore not be interpreted as a permanent hold on a gorilla permit unless the permit has actually been secured according to the applicable booking procedure.

Why You Should Book Early

Uganda offers multiple trekking opportunities, but daily visitor numbers remain deliberately controlled. Permits can therefore become limited. Early planning is particularly valuable if: You are traveling during a popular holiday period. Your international flights are already fixed. You are traveling as a larger group.

You want a particular accommodation property. You are combining gorillas with chimpanzee permits. You want a specific overall safari route. Booking early gives your planner more flexibility to align these elements.

Understanding Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors

One of the biggest planning mistakes travelers can make is treating Bwindi as though every trek starts from one central headquarters. The forest contains separate trekking areas. Road travel around this mountainous region can take time.

Your permit therefore needs to be considered together with your lodge. A beautiful accommodation property may be completely unsuitable if it is positioned far from the briefing area associated with your trek. This can lead to extremely early departures or difficult road transfers.

Good safari planning avoids this by matching the permit and lodge from the beginning.

Uganda Gorilla Permit Availability

Permit availability changes constantly as travelers confirm bookings. A date with availability during your initial inquiry may later become restricted. This is especially important under the full-payment booking structure.

If your preferred date is unavailable, several solutions may be possible. You could adjust your itinerary by a day. You could consider another trekking location.

You could reorganize the sequence of national parks. Flexible travelers generally have more options. However, changes need to be made carefully because altering the gorilla date can affect accommodation and other permit-based activities elsewhere in the itinerary.

Can You Reserve a Permit Without Paying?

Travelers should not assume that a permit can be held indefinitely. UWA's February 2026 notice states that the former seven-day unpaid reservation period was suspended and permits are secured on full payment at booking. If your safari planner tells you availability exists, timely confirmation is therefore important.

This is especially relevant when several travelers need permits for the same date. Finding one remaining permit is not useful for a group of four if four permits are required.

Uganda Gorilla Permit Payment Safety

Permit payments should be handled carefully. UWA has issued guidance warning stakeholders to use approved payment platforms and avoid making payments to unauthorized individuals who claim to represent the authority.

Travelers booking through a safari operator should use an established, licensed company and obtain clear documentation of the arrangements. Never send money to an unknown individual simply because they claim to have access to discounted or last-minute permits.

A genuine gorilla permit is part of a tightly regulated tourism system.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Age Requirements

Gorilla trekking is designed for eligible visitors who can participate safely and follow conservation rules. Families should check the current age requirements before planning the trip. Do not assume young children can accompany parents into the forest.

If your family includes travelers below the applicable trekking age, the itinerary may need alternative arrangements for them during the gorilla activity. This should be considered when choosing accommodation and allocating guides or childcare where available.

What Happens on the Trekking Day?

Your Uganda gorilla permit gives access to the official trekking experience on the specified date. The day generally begins with an early transfer from your lodge to the appropriate briefing area. Park staff explain trekking procedures and conservation rules.

Visitors are allocated to trekking groups and then enter the forest with professional guides and rangers. The search can take a relatively short time or several hours. Gorillas move naturally, so their position cannot be predicted exactly.

Once your assigned family is located, the official regulated viewing period begins.

What Does the Permit Not Cover?

A permit should not be confused with a complete holiday package. Your overall safari may also require: Accommodation before and after the trek. Private road transportation. Driver-guide services. Airport transfers. Other national park activities. Domestic flights where applicable. Personal expenses.

Ask for a detailed safari quotation so you know exactly what is included.

Gorilla Habituation Permits

Uganda also has a separate gorilla habituation experience where officially available. This differs from standard gorilla tracking and has a different permit cost.

UWA's revised tariff effective January 2027 lists gorilla habituation at US$1,800 for foreign non-residents, US$1,600 for foreign residents, US$1,000 for Rest of Africa visitors and UGX750,000 for East African citizens.

Travelers should decide whether they want standard trekking or the specialized habituation experience before permits are purchased. For most first-time visitors, standard trekking remains the usual choice.

Low-Season Uganda Gorilla Permits

Uganda's 2026 low-season pricing creates an important consideration for flexible travelers. UWA announced discounted gorilla tracking permits for April, May and November, but also states that these low-season permits cannot be rescheduled.

Travelers choosing a discounted permit should therefore be confident in their dates before confirming. The lower permit cost can reduce the overall safari budget, but seasonal weather and other itinerary considerations should also be taken into account.

Can a Uganda Gorilla Permit Be Rescheduled?

Any change is governed by current UWA rules. Travelers should never assume they can freely move a permit from one date or trekking location to another. The earlier UWA tariff card includes specific penalties concerning late rescheduling and trekking in a different location.

The 2026 low-season notice additionally states that discounted low-season permits cannot be rescheduled. Always verify the exact terms applicable to your permit before purchase.

Combine Your Permit With a Longer Uganda Safari

A gorilla permit can become the centerpiece of a much larger journey. A popular western Uganda itinerary might combine: Kibale National Park for chimpanzees. Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and boat safaris. Bwindi for gorillas. Longer journeys can include Murchison Falls and other destinations.

Once your gorilla date is confirmed, the additional parks can be arranged before and after it. This produces a logical journey rather than a collection of disconnected activities.

Should You Buy the Permit Before International Flights?

There is no universal rule. Some travelers confirm international flights first because their holiday dates are fixed. Others check permit availability before purchasing non-refundable flights.

The safest approach is to coordinate both decisions closely. If you have very limited date flexibility, verify gorilla availability before committing to an itinerary that depends on one specific trekking day.

Responsible Gorilla Permit Tourism

Permit restrictions are not designed simply to make gorilla trekking exclusive. They are a conservation tool. Controlling visitor numbers helps limit human pressure on habituated gorilla families.

Permit revenue also contributes to the economic system surrounding national parks. Uganda Wildlife Authority describes community revenue-sharing mechanisms and notes benefits associated with gorilla permit tourism around Bwindi.

Visitors should therefore regard the permit as part of a conservation-focused wildlife experience.

Book Uganda Gorilla Permits With the Right Itinerary

The best way to arrange Uganda gorilla permits is to treat them as the foundation of your safari. Confirm availability. Secure the correct date. Identify the correct trekking location. Choose suitable nearby accommodation. Then build the rest of the Uganda journey around the confirmed permit.

This approach reduces unnecessary transfers and gives you the strongest chance of creating a smooth itinerary. Plan your Uganda gorilla permit early and coordinate it with the correct Bwindi or Mgahinga accommodation, transport and wider safari route.
