The best time for chimpanzee trekking depends on whether your priority is easier walking conditions, forest scenery, chimpanzee feeding patterns, visitor numbers or combining the trek with other safari destinations. In leading East African primate destinations such as Kibale National Park in Uganda and Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda, chimpanzee tracking can generally be undertaken throughout the year.

There is therefore no single month in which chimpanzees can be seen and another in which they disappear. Chimpanzees are resident within their forest habitats year-round. Seasonal differences primarily affect rainfall, trail conditions, fruit availability and how far chimpanzees may move while feeding.

Introduction

Uganda Wildlife Authority specifically notes that chimpanzee tracking and habituation in Kibale take place throughout the year.

Chimpanzee Trekking Seasons

Uganda and Rwanda have tropical climates influenced by altitude and local geography. Both countries experience periods that are relatively wetter and relatively drier rather than four sharply defined temperate seasons.

Broadly, travelers often consider June to September and December to February among the relatively drier travel periods. The longer rains commonly affect parts of the region around March to May, while another wetter period often occurs around October and November.

These patterns are useful for general planning but should not be treated as guarantees. Rain can occur in tropical forests during any month.

Is the Dry Season the Best Time?

For many travelers, the relatively dry months are the easiest time for chimpanzee trekking because forest trails may be less muddy. Dry conditions can make steep or uneven sections more comfortable. Photography equipment can also be easier to protect.

This is particularly useful when combining chimpanzees with gorilla trekking in Bwindi, Mgahinga or Volcanoes National Park. However, drier conditions do not automatically mean that chimpanzees are easier to locate. Food availability can influence their movements considerably. Uganda Wildlife Authority notes that in Kibale, chimpanzees may move deeper into the forest during dry periods while searching for food.

Is the Rainy Season Good for Chimpanzee Trekking?

In fact, wet-season chimpanzee trekking can be extremely rewarding. Uganda Wildlife Authority notes that rainy conditions in Kibale can coincide with favorable chimpanzee tracking despite the mud, because food availability can influence where chimpanzees spend their time.

The forest is also exceptionally green during wetter periods. Visitor numbers may be lower than during peak holiday months, depending on the destination and travel year. The main disadvantage is trail condition. Mud can become deep and slippery, making sturdy hiking footwear essential.

January

January is generally considered one of the relatively drier months in Uganda and Rwanda. It can be a good period for combining chimpanzee trekking with gorilla trekking and savannah wildlife viewing. Forest trails may be easier than during the main wet seasons, although rain remains possible.

Travelers should still pack waterproof clothing. January can be popular because it coincides with northern hemisphere winter travel and post-Christmas safari itineraries. Advance permit booking is advisable.

February

February often continues the relatively dry conditions. It is a strong month for travelers wanting to combine Kibale chimpanzees with Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi. In Rwanda, Nyungwe can be combined with Volcanoes National Park and other destinations.

Temperatures remain moderated by elevation in the forested areas. Expect cool or mild mornings rather than extreme tropical heat inside many highland forests.

March

March often marks the transition toward wetter weather. Rainfall may increase and forest trails can become more slippery. However, chimpanzee trekking remains operational.

Travelers willing to accept wet conditions can enjoy green landscapes and potentially lower tourism pressure than during peak months. Good waterproof hiking boots become especially important.

April

April is typically among the wetter travel periods in much of Uganda and Rwanda. It can be an excellent month for travelers who value quiet destinations and lush scenery. However, heavy rain may make forest trails challenging.

Road travel on secondary routes can also require additional time. A well-designed safari should avoid overly tight transfer schedules. Waterproof protection for cameras, phones and documents is essential.

May

May generally remains within the wetter part of the year, although rainfall patterns vary. Chimpanzees remain active and can still be tracked. The forest can be particularly atmospheric during this period, with mist, saturated vegetation and strong flowing streams.

Travelers should be prepared for mud rather than expecting a dry hiking experience. For dedicated primate enthusiasts, this can still be a highly rewarding period.

June

June often marks the beginning of one of East Africa's most popular safari periods. Relatively drier conditions can improve forest walking. The month is excellent for combining chimpanzees with gorilla trekking and savannah parks.

Because demand may increase, permits and preferred accommodation should be booked well ahead. June can also work well for travelers continuing onward to Kenya or Tanzania for a broader East African safari.

July

July is one of the region's peak travel months. Many visitors choose East Africa during the northern hemisphere summer holiday period. Chimpanzee trekking can be combined with mountain gorillas and conventional wildlife safaris.

Drier trail conditions are a major advantage. The disadvantage is demand. Popular lodges and permits can become limited. Early planning is highly recommended if traveling in July.

August

August offers similar advantages to July. It is a popular month for family vacations and longer East African safaris. Kibale, Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth National Park can form an excellent Uganda itinerary.

Rwanda visitors can combine Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park. Expect competition for well-located accommodation, especially where a limited number of desirable lodges serve a particular trekking area.

September

September often remains a favorable month for primate trekking. Conditions can begin changing as the next wetter period approaches, but the month still fits well into broader wildlife itineraries.

It can be particularly attractive for travelers who want many of the advantages of the dry season while moving slightly beyond the busiest July-August period. Rain protection is still mandatory.

October

October often brings increased rainfall. Forest trails may become muddy. However, this should not be considered a poor month for chimpanzee trekking.

Wetter forest conditions can influence food availability and chimpanzee movement. Visitors should concentrate on equipment and footwear rather than avoiding the month automatically. A pair of sturdy boots can transform the experience.

November

November is commonly part of the shorter rainy period. The landscape becomes rich and green. Birding can be excellent in many East African destinations, making November attractive to travelers interested in more than primates.

Visitor numbers may also be lower than during major peak months. Expect rain and organize a flexible itinerary.

December

December often transitions back toward relatively drier conditions. The Christmas and New Year period can be busy. Travelers planning holiday-season chimpanzee trekking should secure permits and accommodation well in advance.

December works particularly well for travelers wanting to combine chimpanzees, mountain gorillas and traditional game viewing during one longer vacation.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale

Kibale National Park can be visited year-round. UWA notes that rainy-season conditions may actually be favorable for tracking because chimpanzees can be influenced by food distribution, even though the trails are muddier. Travelers prioritizing easy walking may prefer the relatively drier periods.

Those primarily interested in chimpanzee behavior should not dismiss the wetter months.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe

Nyungwe is also a year-round destination. Visit Rwanda describes chimpanzee tracking as an early activity that can last from roughly an hour to several hours depending on where the chimpanzees are located, with terrain that can be steep, slippery and muddy.

Proper hiking footwear is therefore essential regardless of season. Because Nyungwe is a rainforest, travelers should always prepare for moisture and changing weather.

Best Time for Photography

Photography depends on more than rainfall. Wet conditions can create dramatic forest colors and mist. Dry conditions may make equipment management easier.

Chimpanzees can be difficult to photograph because they frequently move quickly and may remain in trees. A camera with good low-light capability is useful throughout the year. Protect equipment from humidity as well as direct rain.

Best Time to Combine Chimpanzees and Gorillas

June through September and December through February are popular periods for combined primate safaris because trekking conditions are often relatively favorable. However, permits can also be in greater demand.

Travelers who are comfortable with mud can consider wetter months and still enjoy excellent chimpanzee and gorilla encounters. Wild primates remain within their protected habitats throughout the year.

Best Time for Lower Visitor Numbers

Shoulder and wetter periods can provide quieter experiences. Travelers who dislike peak-season tourism may prefer parts of March-May or October-November, depending on the specific itinerary. Accommodation promotions may sometimes be available, although this varies by property.

The trade-off is a greater likelihood of rain and more difficult trails.

What to Pack in Any Season

Regardless of when you travel, carry:

 • - Waterproof hiking shoes or boots - Long trousers - Long-sleeved shirt - Rain jacket - Small backpack - Drinking water - Binoculars - Camera protection - Insect repellent - Personal medication
 • Do not remove rain gear from the packing list simply because you are visiting during a "dry" month. Tropical forest weather remains unpredictable.

Book Around Permits, Not Weather Alone

Permit availability can be more important than finding the theoretically perfect weather window. If your preferred chimpanzee and gorilla permits are available in a month that is slightly wetter, the trip can still be excellent.

A good safari operator can design the itinerary around confirmed trekking dates while allowing appropriate travel time between destinations.

Choosing the Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking

The best time for chimpanzee trekking ultimately depends on your priorities. Choose the relatively drier months if easier trails and a broader classic safari are most important. Consider wetter months if you are comfortable with mud, prefer greener forests and potentially quieter tourism periods.

For Kibale in Uganda and Nyungwe in Rwanda, chimpanzee trekking is not restricted to a short seasonal window. The most important factors are securing the right permit, choosing practical accommodation, carrying suitable forest clothing and allowing enough time in the itinerary.

Chimpanzees remain active throughout the year, meaning every season provides the possibility of hearing their remarkable calls echo through the forest and experiencing one of Africa's greatest primate encounters.
