Day 01
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
Your safari begins with pickup from your Kigali hotel, Kigali International Airport or another agreed location. Meet your private driver-guide and begin traveling north. The route toward Musanze is one of Rwanda’s most attractive road journeys.
As you leave Kigali, urban neighborhoods gradually give way to intensively cultivated hills and rural communities. The landscape becomes more dramatic as you approach the Virunga mountain region. Weather permitting, the volcanoes rise prominently above the surrounding countryside.
Arrival in Musanze
Arrive in the Musanze area and check into your selected accommodation. The region offers a range of properties from value-oriented guesthouses to comfortable mid-range lodges and premium luxury accommodation.
Your lodge should be selected according to your budget, desired comfort and convenient access to the gorilla trekking arrangements. Enjoy lunch or refreshments after arrival.
Optional Afternoon Experience
Depending on your departure time from Kigali and arrival in Musanze, an optional afternoon activity can be incorporated. You may prefer a cultural or community experience, a scenic excursion or simply time relaxing at the lodge.
Keeping the afternoon relatively easy is often a good idea because gorilla trekking the next morning can be physically demanding. Your guide will brief you about what to wear and what to carry. Prepare hiking boots, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, rain jacket, gloves and a small daypack.

Day 02
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Wake early and have breakfast. Transfer to the designated Volcanoes National Park briefing point. Visitors register before receiving information about gorilla trekking regulations and conservation procedures.
Participants are allocated to habituated gorilla families and trekking groups. The precise trailhead depends on the family assigned for that day. After the briefing, transfer to the appropriate starting point.
Enter the Virunga Forest
Begin the trek accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers. The landscape around Volcanoes National Park can include farmland, bamboo zones and mountain forest. Conditions vary depending on the season and recent rainfall.
Trails can be muddy and uneven. Mountain gorillas move naturally through their territories, so the length of the trek cannot be predicted. Some groups reach their assigned family relatively quickly, while others may spend several hours hiking.
This uncertainty is an important part of authentic wildlife tracking.
Gorilla Encounter
Once trackers determine that the gorillas are nearby, follow your ranger’s instructions closely. Approach quietly and avoid unnecessary movements. Under standard gorilla trekking regulations, visitors normally spend up to one hour observing the habituated family after locating it.
A gorilla family may include a dominant silverback, females, juveniles and infants. The silverback’s size is immediately impressive, but much of the fascination comes from watching ordinary family behavior. Females may feed calmly while youngsters climb vegetation, wrestle or stay close to their mothers.
Gorilla expressions and social relationships can appear remarkably familiar. Photography is allowed, but flash should not be used. Listen carefully to instructions from your ranger throughout the encounter.
Return to the Trailhead
After your viewing period, begin the trek out of the forest. The return walk can take additional time depending on terrain and your location. At the trailhead, meet your driver-guide.
Change into dry or comfortable footwear if necessary and take time for refreshments.
Lunch and Return to Kigali
Enjoy lunch in or around Musanze before beginning the journey back toward Kigali. Travel through Rwanda’s hilly countryside and arrive in Kigali later in the day. Transfer to your hotel or Kigali International Airport according to the confirmed arrangements.
Travelers flying out the same evening should allow substantial time between the expected return and the flight because the duration of gorilla trekking cannot be guaranteed.
