Gorilla Trekking Permits: Uganda and Rwanda Booking Guide
Gorilla trekking permits are one of the most important requirements when planning a mountain gorilla safari in Uganda or Rwanda. A permit authorizes one traveler to participate in an official gorilla trekking experience on a specific date, subject to the regulations of the wildlife authority managing the destination.
Your permit date often becomes the central point around which the rest of the safari is designed. Accommodation, transportation, domestic flights and visits to other national parks should all be coordinated with the confirmed trekking date.
What Is a Gorilla Trekking Permit?
A gorilla trekking permit is official authorization to join a guided trek to a habituated mountain gorilla family. It is not simply an entrance ticket to a national park. The permit covers access to the regulated trekking experience, which involves professional park staff, trackers and conservation management.
A traveler cannot normally arrive at a gorilla park without the correct arrangements and expect to join a trek simply by paying at the gate. Advance planning is essential.
Where Are Gorilla Permits Required?
In Uganda, permits are required for official mountain gorilla trekking in: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In Rwanda, permits are required for trekking in: Volcanoes National Park. Each country manages its own permit system and pricing.
The permit you purchase for Uganda cannot be used in Rwanda, and vice versa. If you are planning to trek gorillas in both countries, you therefore need separate permits for each trekking date.
Uganda Gorilla Permit Prices
Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced discounted low-season gorilla tracking rates for April, May and November 2026. The official notice lists US$600 for foreign non-residents and US$500 for foreign residents during those months. UWA also announced a revised structure taking effect on 1 January 2027, with standard gorilla tracking listed at US$800 for foreign non-residents, US$700 for foreign residents, US$500 for Rest of Africa visitors and UGX300,000 for East African citizens.
Because wildlife-authority tariffs can change, travelers should always confirm the current rate applicable to their nationality, residency status and trekking date before making payment. The permit price should also be considered separately from the total safari cost.
Accommodation, transportation, meals, guide services and other national park activities are additional unless specifically included in a safari package.
Rwanda Gorilla Permit Prices
Rwanda's standard mountain gorilla permit for international visitors is currently US$1,500 per person per day. Visit Rwanda also publishes special categories for eligible Rwandans, East African citizens, African visitors and qualifying residents. The minimum trekking age is 15.
When comparing Uganda and Rwanda, consider the entire safari rather than only the permit price. Transport, accommodation, number of nights and additional activities can substantially influence the final trip cost.
Why Are Gorilla Permits Limited?
Mountain gorillas are endangered great apes living within sensitive forest ecosystems. Tourism needs to be carefully managed. Only habituated gorilla families are used for regular visitor trekking, and each family receives a controlled number of tourists.
Visitors enter a protected natural habitat under strict supervision rather than moving freely around the animals.
When Should You Book Gorilla Trekking Permits?
Book as early as reasonably possible if your travel dates are fixed. Permit availability can become especially tight during popular holiday periods and traditionally busy safari months.
Travelers planning honeymoons, family holidays or other trips connected to fixed international flights should avoid leaving permit arrangements until the last moment. If your dates are flexible, availability may be easier to work around. This flexibility can also help when selecting accommodation.
We normally recommend dealing with the permit before finalizing non-refundable accommodation around the gorilla destination. This is particularly important in Bwindi.Gorilla Permit Availability
Availability varies by date and destination. One month may have considerable availability while another may be heavily booked. Permit availability is also not the same as accommodation availability.
A trekking date could technically have permits remaining while your preferred lodges are already full. Good safari planning therefore checks both components together.
For Uganda, there is an additional geographical consideration: the permit needs to correspond with a trekking location that works with your accommodation and wider route. A permit in an inconvenient sector can create unnecessary road transfers.
Booking Uganda Gorilla Permits
Uganda's permits are managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. UWA's published permit-management guidelines state that foreign non-resident tracking permits are purchased through tour operators licensed by the Uganda Tourism Board. The guidelines also describe official reservation procedures and permit categories.
For travelers booking a complete safari, having the safari operator coordinate the permit can simplify the process considerably. The operator can match the trekking date with the route, vehicle arrangements and lodge location. This reduces the risk of booking individual components that do not work together.
UWA also warns travelers and tourism stakeholders to use approved payment channels and avoid unauthorized individuals claiming to collect permit payments.
Booking Rwanda Gorilla Permits
Rwanda permits can be arranged through official booking channels or through a licensed tour operator. Visit Rwanda states that permits can be booked online and also recommends licensed tour operators and guides for travelers who prefer a private company to coordinate the trip.
Full Payment and Uganda Permit Reservations
Uganda introduced an important permit-booking change in 2026. UWA suspended its previous seven-day unpaid reservation window from 1 March 2026. The official notice states that operators now secure permits upon full payment at the time of booking rather than holding them temporarily without payment.
This makes timely decision-making more important. A permit showing as available today should not automatically be assumed to remain available while travelers spend several days deciding whether to confirm. For popular dates, availability can change.
Gorilla Permits and Bwindi Trekking Sectors
This is one of the most important pieces of Uganda safari planning. Bwindi is a large mountainous forest with separate trekking areas. You should not treat every Bwindi lodge as equally convenient for every permit.
Once the trekking location is known, accommodation should normally be selected in a practical position relative to that briefing area. Incorrect planning can mean a very early departure and a difficult transfer before you have even started trekking. The solution is straightforward:
permit first, appropriate lodge second. When the two are coordinated properly, the trekking morning is much easier.
Can You Change a Gorilla Permit Date?
Permit amendments are subject to the applicable rules of the issuing authority. Travelers should never assume that a gorilla permit can simply be moved to another date free of charge. Restrictions, deadlines, penalties or complete loss of payment may apply depending on the circumstances.
Uganda's tariff information, for example, includes penalties relating to late rescheduling and trekking in a different location. This is one reason travelers should confirm their broader itinerary carefully before permit purchase.
Always request the current amendment and cancellation conditions applying to your specific booking.
Can Gorilla Permits Be Refunded?
Refund conditions depend on the issuing authority's rules and the circumstances involved. Travelers should not purchase permits with the assumption that they are freely refundable. Read the current terms before confirming.
Minimum Age for Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking has age restrictions. Rwanda states a minimum age of 15 years for its gorilla trekking experience. Families traveling with younger children therefore need to plan carefully.
Do not design an itinerary assuming every member of the family can automatically participate. Where younger children are traveling, alternative arrangements may be necessary during the trekking day. Current regulations should always be checked when booking.
What Does a Gorilla Permit Include?
A permit provides access to the official gorilla trekking activity on the specified date. It should not be confused with a complete safari package. Depending on the destination and current tariff structure, the trekking activity incorporates the relevant park-managed elements of the encounter.
Gorilla Trekking Versus Gorilla Habituation Permits
Uganda also offers a specialized gorilla habituation experience in the areas where that activity is officially available. The habituation experience is different from standard gorilla trekking and carries its own permit structure.
Are Gorilla Permits Worth the Cost?
For many travelers, yes. The cost is substantial, particularly in Rwanda, but the permit provides access to an extraordinarily rare and carefully managed wildlife encounter. Only a limited number of people can visit habituated mountain gorillas each day.
The permit should therefore be viewed not merely as a ticket but as part of the regulated conservation model that allows gorilla tourism to exist.
Plan Your Gorilla Permit Before the Rest of the Safari
When planning a gorilla journey, start with: Your intended travel dates. Your preferred trekking country. Permit availability. Your available number of safari days. Only then should the detailed route be finalized.
Book Gorilla Trekking Permits as Part of Your Safari
Travelers can avoid many common logistical problems by arranging gorilla trekking permits together with accommodation and transport rather than purchasing each component independently. Tell us when you want to travel, how many people are trekking and whether you prefer Uganda, Rwanda or both.
