Safari Overview

A 6 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Safari combines encounters with Africa's mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in one carefully planned primate adventure. With six days available, travelers can explore Uganda's forest ecosystems at a more comfortable pace than on very short itineraries while experiencing two of the country's signature wildlife activities. Uganda is exceptionally rich in primates. The forests of southwestern Uganda protect endangered mountain gorillas, while Kibale National Park is internationally recognized for its chimpanzees and remarkable diversity of primate species. This itinerary generally combines Kibale with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, creating a route through some of western Uganda's most beautiful landscapes. Private transportation, professional guiding and prearranged trekking permits make the safari suitable for first-time Uganda visitors as well as experienced wildlife travelers.

Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Arrival in Entebbe

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where you will be met by our representative. After introductions, transfer to your hotel in Entebbe. Depending on your flight schedule, spend the rest of the day relaxing or participate in an optional local excursion.

Your driver-guide will brief you about the journey to western Uganda, expected trekking conditions and the items you should prepare for the forest. Get a good night's rest before starting the safari.

    Main Destination: Entebbe

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

    Entebbe to Kibale National Park

After breakfast, depart Entebbe and travel toward Kibale National Park in western Uganda. The journey takes you through rural landscapes and increasingly green countryside. As you approach the Fort Portal and Kibale region, tea plantations, forest patches and rolling hills create attractive scenery.

Lunch will be arranged along the route. Continue to your lodge near Kibale National Park and check in. Depending on arrival time, you may spend the afternoon relaxing or participate in an optional community or nature activity.

The Kibale region is particularly attractive to birdwatchers and travelers interested in tropical ecosystems. Enjoy dinner and prepare for the following day's chimpanzee trek.

  3. Day 03

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park

After breakfast, transfer to the appropriate briefing point for your chimpanzee trekking experience. Kibale National Park protects one of East Africa's most important tropical forest ecosystems and supports an exceptional diversity of primates.

After registration, professional guides explain trekking procedures and appropriate behavior around chimpanzees. Enter the forest in search of a habituated chimpanzee community. The experience begins long before you actually see the chimpanzees.

Your guide may identify calls, nests, feeding signs and other evidence of primate activity. Chimpanzees are extremely vocal. Their pant-hoots and calls can travel considerable distances through the forest, producing an exciting atmosphere as trackers determine their location.

When the community is found, watch the chimpanzees feed, groom, communicate and travel through the forest. They may remain on the ground or move rapidly into the canopy. Follow your guide's instructions regarding viewing distances and photography.

Kibale also supports several other primates, so additional sightings may occur during the forest walk. After completing the trek, return to your lodge. Depending on your confirmed itinerary, the afternoon can be spent relaxing or exploring a nearby wetland or community project.

  4. Day 04

Kibale to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Enjoy breakfast before checking out and beginning the journey south toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This transfer reveals the diversity of western Uganda.

Depending on the chosen route, you may travel past landscapes associated with the Rwenzori region and Queen Elizabeth conservation area before continuing into the southwestern highlands. Lunch is arranged during the journey.

As you approach Bwindi, the terrain becomes increasingly mountainous. Cultivated hillsides and villages surround patches of dense natural forest. Bwindi is an ancient rainforest recognized internationally for its biodiversity and mountain gorilla population.

Arrive at your lodge near the trekking sector specified on your permit. After checking in, prepare your hiking equipment and discuss the next morning's arrangements with your guide.

  5. Day 05

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Today is the main highlight of your 6 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Safari. Have an early breakfast and transfer to the park briefing point. Uganda Wildlife Authority personnel will register participants, explain trekking regulations and assign visitors to habituated gorilla families.

Enter Bwindi with your ranger guides and trackers. The forest's steep slopes, dense vegetation and changing weather make each trek different. Mountain gorillas move freely through large territories, meaning it is impossible to know exactly how long it will take to find your assigned family.

Your trek may last only a few hours or require a longer hike. Hiring a porter is recommended. In addition to carrying your backpack, porters can provide useful assistance on steep or slippery terrain. When the gorillas are located, your ranger will guide you into an appropriate viewing position.

Standard trekking regulations normally allow visitors up to one hour with the habituated gorilla family. Watch quietly as the gorillas continue their natural routines.

The dominant silverback may sit only a short distance away while other family members feed or rest. Juveniles often climb branches, wrestle or move inquisitively around the group. The encounter provides extraordinary opportunities for observation and photography.

After the permitted period, begin your trek back through the forest. Meet your driver-guide and return to your lodge. The remainder of the day is available for rest. If your trek finishes relatively early, an optional community activity may be possible.

  6. Day 06

    Bwindi to Entebbe – Departure

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the return journey to Entebbe. Drive through southwestern Uganda, enjoying views of farms, hills and towns along the route. Stop for lunch and refreshments.

Where timing permits, visit the Equator for photographs and an opportunity to purchase locally made crafts. Continue to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight or transfer to your hotel if you are spending another night in Uganda.

Your 6 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Safari concludes after experiencing both of Uganda's famous great apes.

Gorilla Trekking and Chimpanzee Trekking Compared

Combining these two activities creates one of Uganda's most interesting wildlife itineraries. Mountain gorillas usually live in relatively cohesive family units dominated by a mature silverback. Once located, a gorilla family may remain within a relatively small area while feeding and resting.

Chimpanzees can behave very differently. They live in larger communities whose members frequently split into smaller groups. They can move quickly through the forest, climb high into the canopy and communicate with powerful vocalizations. Experiencing both species demonstrates just how varied great ape behavior can be.

    Why Visit Kibale National Park?

Kibale is widely considered Uganda's leading chimpanzee destination. Its tropical forest supports numerous primate species alongside a rich variety of birds, butterflies and plants. The wider Kibale region also offers beautiful crater landscapes, wetlands, tea plantations and community tourism experiences.

Combining Kibale with Bwindi creates a particularly strong itinerary for travelers whose main interest is primates and forest ecology.

    Trekking Permits

Gorilla and chimpanzee activities require valid permits. Availability should be checked as early as possible, particularly for gorilla trekking. Your confirmed trekking dates determine the rest of the itinerary, including accommodation and transportation.

We therefore recommend securing permits before committing to non-refundable independent travel arrangements.
