8 Day Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and meet your safari representative after completing immigration formalities. Transfer to your hotel in Entebbe for your first night in Uganda.

The day is deliberately kept relaxed so you can recover from your international flight. If you arrive early, optional activities around Entebbe can be arranged. Your guide will brief you about the journey ahead and confirm arrangements for the following morning.

After breakfast, leave Entebbe and travel west toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey introduces you to Uganda’s countryside as urban areas give way to farmland, trading centers and increasingly scenic landscapes. Lunch is arranged along the route.

As you approach the Albertine Rift, the scenery becomes more dramatic. Queen Elizabeth National Park protects an impressive mix of savannah, wetlands, crater landscapes, woodland and lakes. Depending on arrival time, enjoy an introductory game drive.

Possible sightings include elephants, Uganda kobs, buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs and baboons. Continue to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Wake early for your first full wildlife day. The morning hours are often productive because temperatures are cooler and many animals are active. Your driver-guide will select suitable tracks based on recent wildlife movements.

Search for elephants moving through the savannah, Uganda kobs gathering in open grasslands and large buffalo herds. Lions can sometimes be found around areas of concentrated prey. Leopards and spotted hyenas are also present but are more elusive. Return to the lodge for breakfast or lunch depending on the schedule.

Later, proceed to the Kazinga Channel for a boat safari. This natural waterway connects Lake George and Lake Edward and supports some of the park’s most concentrated wildlife. Large groups of hippos are frequently observed in the water, while Nile crocodiles may rest on the banks.

Elephants and buffaloes sometimes approach the channel to drink, providing excellent opportunities for photography. The boat safari is also especially rewarding for birdwatchers. Return to your lodge in the evening.

Today provides more time to explore Queen Elizabeth rather than immediately leaving after one game drive and boat safari. Begin with another morning wildlife drive or a more relaxed start depending on your interests.

A second game drive can be particularly valuable because wildlife sightings are never guaranteed and conditions vary from day to day. Your guide may explore different parts of the park in search of species not seen previously.

Travelers interested in birds can focus on wetland, savannah or woodland habitats, while photographers may prefer spending additional time around major wildlife concentrations. The afternoon can be used for an optional activity, lodge relaxation or another short game drive.

Having two full days in Queen Elizabeth creates a much richer wildlife experience than rushing through the park.

After breakfast, begin the journey toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Depending on your final route, travel through the Ishasha region of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Ishasha is famous for its unusual population of tree-climbing lions.

These lions are occasionally seen resting on large fig-tree branches during the day. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the experience of searching the treetops adds a unique dimension to the safari. The area also supports elephants, topis, buffaloes and Uganda kobs. Continue toward Bwindi.

The landscape gradually changes from savannah to forested hills and cultivated highlands. Arrive at your lodge near the trekking sector indicated on your gorilla permit. Spend the evening preparing your trekking equipment and getting a good night’s rest.

Today is the principal highlight of your 8 Day Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari. Wake early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the appropriate Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters. Park rangers conduct a briefing explaining trekking procedures, forest conditions and how to behave around mountain gorillas.

Visitors are divided into groups and assigned to habituated gorilla families. Enter the forest accompanied by ranger guides and trackers. Bwindi’s steep terrain, thick vegetation and changing weather make each trek different.

Mountain gorillas move freely throughout their territories, so the amount of walking required depends on where the assigned family has traveled. A trek might take a few hours or considerably longer.

Hiring a porter is highly recommended. Porters can carry your daypack and assist on difficult slopes while earning income from tourism. Once trackers locate the gorilla family, your ranger will guide you carefully into a viewing position.

Under standard gorilla trekking regulations, visitors are normally permitted to spend up to one hour with the habituated family. This can be one of the most memorable hours of any African safari.

A dominant silverback may rest nearby while females feed or care for infants. Juveniles often climb branches, wrestle and explore their surroundings. Because the gorillas are encountered in their natural habitat, no two visits are identical.

After your permitted viewing time, trek back to the trailhead and meet your driver. Return to your lodge for a hot meal and relaxation.

After the physical demands of gorilla trekking, enjoy a more relaxed day in the Bwindi region. Depending on your interests, choose an optional community visit, guided forest walk or birding experience. Community tourism provides an opportunity to learn about the lives of people living around the national park.

You may visit local craft makers, farms or cultural initiatives and gain insight into how tourism and conservation affect communities bordering the forest. Nature enthusiasts may prefer a guided walk focusing on birds, plants, butterflies and forest ecology.

Alternatively, spend the day at your lodge enjoying the peaceful setting. This additional day is one of the strongest advantages of choosing an eight-day safari.

After breakfast, check out and begin your journey back toward Entebbe. Travel through southwestern Uganda with stops for lunch and refreshments. Where your flight schedule allows, visit the Equator for photographs, coffee and souvenir shopping.
