Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and meet your private safari guide. Transfer to your selected hotel and settle in. Travelers arriving early may begin exploring Kigali, while those arriving after a long international journey can simply relax.

Kigali is an important part of the Rwanda experience and provides useful context before visiting the country's national parks. Overnight in Kigali.

    Main Destination: Kigali

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

Kigali City Experience – Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, enjoy a privately guided city experience. A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial can be included for travelers interested in understanding Rwanda's recent history. Other possibilities include local markets, art galleries and cultural attractions.

Later, depart Kigali and drive north toward Volcanoes National Park. The landscape becomes increasingly mountainous as you approach Musanze. The Virunga volcanoes provide a spectacular backdrop to the region.

Arrive at your lodge, check in and prepare for the following morning's gorilla trek.

    Main Destination: Volcanoes National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  3. Day 03

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

After an early breakfast, transfer to the gorilla trekking briefing point. Park officials explain trekking procedures and conservation rules before assigning visitors to habituated gorilla families. You then enter the forest with professional guides and trackers.

    Meeting Rwanda's Mountain Gorillas

The length of the trek depends on the current location of the gorillas. You may walk through bamboo forest, steep slopes and muddy vegetation. Hiring a porter is strongly recommended.

When the gorillas are found, your guide will carefully position the group. The encounter can include sightings of the dominant silverback, adult females, juveniles and infants. Watching a gorilla family at close range is often the defining moment of a Rwanda safari.

After your regulated viewing period, trek back and return to your lodge. The remainder of the day is free for rest.

    Main Destination: Volcanoes National Park

  4. Day 04

Golden Monkey Tracking or Second Gorilla Experience

Today can be adapted to your interests. Golden monkey tracking is a popular option. These colorful Virunga primates live in bamboo forest and are much more energetic than mountain gorillas.

The experience provides an interesting contrast to the previous day. Serious gorilla enthusiasts may instead choose to purchase a second gorilla permit, subject to availability. A second trek can involve another family and completely different behavior.

Travelers preferring a less active schedule can choose a cultural activity or spend more time enjoying their lodge.

    Main Destination: Volcanoes National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  5. Day 05

Volcanoes Region – Nyungwe Forest Route

After breakfast, begin the journey toward southwestern Rwanda. The route provides beautiful views over Rwanda's hills, farmland and western landscapes. Depending on the selected routing, scenic stops can be made along the way.

The journey itself demonstrates how quickly Rwanda's environments change. Arrive in the Nyungwe region and check into your accommodation. Enjoy dinner and prepare for chimpanzee trekking.

    Main Destination: Kibale National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  6. Day 06

    Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest

Wake early and transfer to the chimpanzee trekking starting point. Following a briefing, enter the rainforest with trackers and guides. Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and active primates.

They may move quickly along the forest floor or feed high in trees. Powerful vocalizations often help trackers locate the community. Once found, visitors can observe them according to current park regulations.

The chimpanzee experience differs substantially from gorilla trekking because of the speed, noise and movement of the animals. Nyungwe is also home to many other primate species, adding to the wildlife experience. Return to your lodge after trekking.

    Main Destination: Kibale National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation Options

    Same as previous day

  7. Day 07

    Nyungwe Forest Exploration

Spend another day experiencing Nyungwe and its surroundings. Depending on your interests, activities may include a guided forest walk, primate-focused experience or canopy walk. The additional day allows you to appreciate the rainforest without having to leave immediately after chimpanzee trekking.

Birdwatchers may find this particularly rewarding because Nyungwe is one of Rwanda's most important bird habitats. Travelers preferring relaxation can spend the afternoon at the lodge.

    Main Destination: Kibale National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Same as previous day

  8. Day 08

    Nyungwe – Akagera Region

After breakfast, begin traveling across Rwanda toward Akagera National Park. The journey from forested western Rwanda toward the east reveals another dramatic change in landscape. Your private guide will schedule appropriate meal and rest stops.

Arrive at your accommodation near Akagera and prepare for the following day's wildlife activities. Depending on arrival time, an introductory game drive may be possible.

    Main Destination: Nyungwe National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  9. Day 09

    Full-Day Akagera National Park Safari

Spend a full day exploring Akagera National Park. This is Rwanda's primary destination for classic savannah game viewing. The park contains open plains, woodland, lakes and extensive wetlands.

Wildlife that may be encountered includes:

    • African elephants
    • Cape buffaloes
    • Giraffes
    • Zebras
    • Impalas
    • Topis
    • Waterbucks
    • Warthogs
    • Hippos
    • Crocodiles
    • Baboons
    • Vervet monkeys

Lions, leopards and rhinos are also present. No wildlife sighting is guaranteed, but experienced guides will explore different habitats to maximize opportunities. An optional boat safari can be included to observe hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds from another perspective.

Return to your lodge after the game drive.

    Main Destination: Akagera National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  10. Day 10

    Akagera – Kigali – Departure

Begin the day with an optional final game drive, depending on your flight schedule. Morning wildlife activity can be excellent and provides one final opportunity to see species missed earlier. Afterward, leave Akagera and drive back to Kigali.

Your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport or a city hotel. This completes your 10 Day Best of Rwanda Gorilla Safari.

Why This Is One of the Best Rwanda Itineraries

Ten days provide an excellent balance between activity and travel time. Shorter safaris often require choosing between gorillas, chimpanzees and traditional game viewing. A ten-day itinerary allows you to experience all three.

It also provides time for secondary activities such as golden monkey tracking, forest walks and cultural experiences. This makes the safari suitable for travelers who may only visit Rwanda once and want to see the country's major highlights.

    Gorilla Trekking Permits

A valid gorilla permit is required for Volcanoes National Park. Daily permit availability is limited. Early booking is therefore particularly important during popular travel months.

A second permit is required if you choose to trek twice. Permit prices and regulations can change, so always confirm current information during the booking process.

    Chimpanzee Permits

Chimpanzee trekking also requires a separate permit. We recommend coordinating gorilla and chimpanzee permit availability before finalizing the itinerary. Once both dates are established, the rest of the route can be structured efficiently.

    Main Destination: Kibale National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch
