Day 01
Arrival in Kigali
Your 9 Day Uganda Rwanda Primates Safari begins in Kigali. A private safari representative meets you at Kigali International Airport and transfers you to your selected hotel. Depending on your arrival time, spend the afternoon relaxing or take a short introduction to Rwanda's capital.
Travelers arriving early may visit cultural centers, local markets, art galleries or selected historical attractions. Overnight in Kigali and prepare for the journey into the Virunga region.

Day 02
Kigali – Volcanoes or Virunga Region
After breakfast, begin the scenic drive north from Kigali. The road passes through Rwanda's famous rolling hills and productive agricultural countryside. As you approach Musanze, the Virunga volcanoes rise dramatically above the surrounding landscape.
Depending on the final itinerary, this day can position you near Volcanoes National Park or continue toward the Uganda border. Arrive at your lodge and settle in. Your guide will brief you about the following morning's primate activity and make sure you have suitable clothing and equipment.

Day 03
Golden Monkey Tracking
Begin your primate adventure with golden monkey tracking in the Virunga region. After breakfast, transfer to the designated briefing point and meet your ranger guides. Golden monkeys inhabit bamboo-dominated forest and are known for their distinctive golden-orange coloring.
Tracking Golden Monkeys
The experience is very different from mountain gorilla trekking. Golden monkeys are small, energetic and capable of moving rapidly through the bamboo. Once the troop is located, you may watch individuals feeding, jumping between stems and interacting with one another.
Photographers often find golden monkey tracking both rewarding and challenging because the animals rarely remain still for long. After tracking, return to your lodge and relax. This is an excellent introduction to the Virunga ecosystem before the more demanding gorilla trek.

Day 04
Cross into Uganda – Gorilla Trekking Region
After breakfast, continue toward Uganda. Complete immigration formalities at the border and drive into the spectacular southwestern highlands. Depending on your confirmed gorilla permit, travel toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Both offer outstanding mountain gorilla experiences. Bwindi is characterized by ancient rainforest, steep valleys and several trekking sectors, while Mgahinga lies on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Arrive at your selected lodge and prepare for the following morning.

Day 05
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Wake early and transfer to your assigned gorilla trekking briefing point. Uganda Wildlife Authority personnel explain the regulations governing trekking before assigning visitors to habituated mountain gorilla families. You then enter the forest with trackers and an experienced ranger guide.
The Gorilla Trek
The location of the gorillas changes daily. Your trek may take less time or require several hours depending on where the family has moved. Conditions can include mud, steep slopes and dense vegetation.
Hiring a porter is strongly recommended. Porters carry your daypack, water and camera equipment and can assist on difficult terrain. Eventually, trackers locate the gorillas.
The first close view of a mountain gorilla can be extraordinary. You may see the dominant silverback resting nearby, females feeding and juveniles climbing through vegetation. The regulated encounter gives you time to observe individual behavior and family relationships.
Afterward, trek back to the starting point and return to your lodge.

Day 06
Gorilla Region – Transfer Toward Chimpanzee Country
After breakfast, leave the mountain gorilla region and begin traveling toward your selected chimpanzee destination. For itineraries centered primarily in Uganda, Kibale National Park is an excellent option.
The journey across western Uganda provides attractive views of crater landscapes, farmland, forest and rural communities. Your guide will schedule appropriate meal and rest stops. Arrive at your lodge near the chimpanzee trekking area and check in.
Spend the evening preparing for another major primate encounter.

Day 07
Chimpanzee Tracking
After an early breakfast, transfer to the chimpanzee tracking briefing point. Following instructions from park guides, enter the forest to search for a habituated chimpanzee community.
Encountering Chimpanzees
Chimpanzee tracking differs substantially from gorilla trekking. Chimpanzees are faster, more vocal and often spend time high in trees. Trackers listen for their distinctive calls and study signs of recent movement.
Once the community is located, visitors observe them according to current conservation regulations. You may see individuals grooming, feeding, calling, moving through vegetation or interacting socially. Their intelligence and complex relationships make chimpanzees fascinating to watch.
Other primates may also be encountered during the forest excursion. Return to your lodge afterward.

Day 08
Additional Primate or Forest Experience
Your eighth day gives you flexibility to deepen the primate theme. Depending on the destination and permits, you might undertake another forest activity, swamp walk, monkey-focused excursion or community experience.
Travelers with a strong interest in chimpanzees can enquire about additional habituation-style experiences where available. Alternatively, use the day to begin the journey back toward Rwanda at a relaxed pace.
The nine-day format allows you to avoid excessively long transfer days immediately following strenuous trekking. Spend your final safari night at a strategically selected lodge.

Day 09
Return to Kigali – Departure
After breakfast, continue toward Kigali. If returning from Uganda, complete immigration procedures at the border and travel through Rwanda's scenic countryside. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for lunch, shopping or additional sightseeing in Kigali.
Your driver-guide will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport. This concludes your 9 Day Uganda Rwanda Primates Safari.
Primates You May See
The safari can expose travelers to a remarkable range of primates.
Mountain Gorillas
Mountain gorillas are the headline attraction. They live in stable family groups and are generally encountered on or near the forest floor. Watching their subtle communication and social interactions is one of Africa's most memorable wildlife experiences.
Chimpanzees
Chimpanzees are highly intelligent, vocal and energetic. Their fast movement and complex social dynamics make tracking them an exciting contrast to the gorilla experience.
Golden Monkeys
Golden monkeys are associated with the bamboo forests of the Virunga region. They add color, speed and energy to the itinerary.
Other Monkey Species
Depending on the destinations included, you may encounter colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, baboons and other primates. Not every species can be guaranteed, but the region's diversity makes forest excursions rewarding.
Gorilla, Chimpanzee and Golden Monkey Permits
Each major primate activity has its own permit requirements. Mountain gorilla permits are particularly limited and should be secured early. Chimpanzee and golden monkey permits should also be reserved in advance.
Prices and regulations can change, so current information should be confirmed when booking. Your final itinerary should be structured around confirmed permit dates.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Best Time for a Uganda Rwanda Primates Safari
The 9 day uganda rwanda primates safari can operate throughout the year. Drier months are popular because trekking paths can be easier. However, rainforest conditions remain unpredictable and rain is possible during any season.
Wetter months produce lush landscapes and atmospheric forests but can make trails more slippery. Strong waterproof footwear and rain protection are essential year-round.
Fitness and Trekking Requirements
A reasonable level of physical fitness is useful. Gorilla trekking can range from moderate to strenuous depending on the gorillas' location. Chimpanzee tracking can involve faster walking as trackers follow moving animals.
Golden monkey tracking is often less physically demanding but still takes place on uneven terrain. Regular walking before travel helps prepare for the safari.
What to Pack
Important items include:
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Long trekking trousers
- Long-sleeved shirts
- Rain jacket
- Trekking gloves
- Gaiters
- Warm layer
- Insect repellent
- Refillable water bottle
- Daypack
- Camera and spare batteries
- Binoculars
- Waterproof camera protection
- Sun protection
For multiple trekking days, carry enough suitable clothing or select lodges offering laundry services.
Accommodation
Accommodation can be tailored to budget, mid-range or luxury preferences. Near gorilla parks, correct location is critical because trekking sectors can be far apart. Chimpanzee and golden monkey accommodation should similarly provide convenient access to briefing points.
We can combine different lodge categories to balance comfort, location and overall safari cost.
