9 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Safari

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and meet your safari representative. After completing airport procedures, transfer to your hotel. The first day is reserved for relaxation after your international journey.

If you arrive early, optional Entebbe activities can be organized. Your guide will brief you on the route, trekking procedures and recommended equipment.

After breakfast, meet your driver-guide and begin the journey west toward Kibale National Park. Travel through rural Uganda as the landscape gradually becomes greener. As you approach the Fort Portal and Kibale region, tea plantations, rolling hills and forest patches create attractive scenery.

Lunch will be arranged along the route. Continue to your lodge near Kibale National Park. The forest supports an extraordinary diversity of primates, birds, butterflies and plants.

Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the following day.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the designated chimpanzee trekking briefing point. Professional guides explain the rules and introduce participants to the forest environment. Enter Kibale in search of a habituated chimpanzee community.

Tracking chimpanzees can be energetic because these primates move through large territories. You may hear their calls long before you see them. Loud pant-hoots and other vocalizations echo through the forest and help trackers establish the group’s position.

Once the chimpanzees are located, observe them during the permitted viewing period. You may see individuals feeding in fruiting trees, grooming, resting or traveling across the forest floor. Mothers may carry young chimpanzees, while adult males can occasionally display dramatically.

Their complex social behavior is one of the most fascinating aspects of the encounter. Kibale is also home to other monkeys, and additional primate sightings may occur during the forest walk. Return to your lodge after trekking.

Today allows you to explore the Kibale region beyond the main chimpanzee trek. Depending on your interests, an optional wetland walk, community experience, birding excursion or second forest activity may be arranged. Wetland walks can provide opportunities to see smaller primates, birds and interesting plant life.

Community visits allow travelers to learn how people live around protected forest areas and how tourism can contribute to local livelihoods. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxed morning at your lodge.

Having an additional day in Kibale creates a much deeper experience than simply arriving, tracking chimpanzees and immediately leaving.

After breakfast, begin your journey south toward the gorilla region. The route passes through some of western Uganda’s most attractive landscapes. Depending on the final itinerary, you may travel near the Queen Elizabeth conservation area before continuing into the southwestern highlands.

Lunch is arranged along the way. Rather than rushing directly into the next major activity, the nine-day itinerary allows this travel day to remain comfortable. Arrive at your selected overnight destination or continue toward Bwindi depending on road conditions and lodge location.

After breakfast, continue toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The scenery becomes increasingly mountainous. Terraced farms, valleys and forest-covered hills dominate the landscape.

Bwindi is one of Africa’s most biologically important forests and is internationally famous for its population of mountain gorillas. Arrive at the trekking sector allocated on your permit and check into your lodge.

Because Bwindi contains several trekking sectors, lodge selection is carefully coordinated with the permit location. Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for the gorilla trek. Your guide will explain what time you need to leave, what to carry and how to dress.

Today is the main highlight of your 9 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Safari. Wake early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the appropriate Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing center. Park staff explain trekking procedures, conservation regulations and appropriate behavior around the gorillas.

You will then be assigned to a habituated gorilla family. Enter the forest with experienced ranger guides and trackers. Bwindi’s rugged topography means the trek can be physically demanding.

Trails may cross steep slopes, thick vegetation and muddy areas. Mountain gorillas move naturally through their territories, so trekking duration varies. Some families may be relatively close to the trailhead, while others may require several hours of hiking.

Hiring a porter is highly recommended. In addition to carrying your backpack, porters can provide valuable assistance on difficult terrain. Eventually, trackers will signal that the gorillas are near.

Your ranger will explain how to approach quietly. Under standard trekking regulations, visitors are normally permitted to spend up to one hour with the habituated gorilla family. The experience can be extraordinary.

A silverback may rest just beyond the vegetation while females feed and juveniles play. Young gorillas may climb branches or move inquisitively around the group. Infants frequently remain close to their mothers.

Observe quietly and follow all instructions from your ranger. Photography is allowed, but flash should not be used. After your viewing time, trek back to the starting point.

Meet your driver-guide and return to your lodge.

After completing the gorilla trek, enjoy a slower day in the Bwindi region. Choose an optional community experience, forest walk or birding excursion. A guided community visit can introduce you to local crafts, agriculture, music or conservation-linked tourism initiatives.

Nature enthusiasts may prefer a guided walk focusing on birds, plants and forest ecology. Bwindi supports remarkable biodiversity beyond mountain gorillas. Alternatively, spend the day at your lodge reflecting on the gorilla encounter and enjoying the mountain scenery.

The additional day ensures that your experience of Bwindi extends beyond a single trek.

After breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Entebbe. Travel through southwestern Uganda with stops for lunch and refreshments. Where flight timing permits, stop around the Equator for photographs and souvenir shopping.

Gorilla Trekking Versus Chimpanzee Trekking

Although both activities involve tracking great apes in tropical forest, the experiences are very different. Chimpanzees are highly mobile and vocal. They may travel quickly across the forest floor or high in the trees, and their calls can be heard over significant distances.

Mountain gorillas tend to remain in more cohesive family groups. Once located, they may feed or rest within a relatively small area. The calmer atmosphere around a gorilla family contrasts strongly with the energetic nature of chimpanzee tracking.

Experiencing both provides a deeper appreciation of primate behavior.

Why Spend More Time in Kibale?

A longer itinerary allows travelers to appreciate Kibale as an ecosystem rather than simply a location for one chimpanzee trek. The wider region contains wetlands, tea farms, community areas and scenic landscapes. Extra time also provides better opportunities for birdwatching and seeing additional monkey species.
