Safari Overview

A 9 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari is an excellent choice for travelers who want to experience Rwanda beyond a short gorilla trekking excursion. Over nine days, this itinerary combines the country's famous mountain gorillas with savannah wildlife, scenic landscapes, cultural experiences and enough time to travel between destinations at a comfortable pace. Rwanda may be geographically compact, but its wildlife diversity is exceptional. Volcanoes National Park protects mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and spectacular Virunga scenery, while Akagera National Park provides classic African game viewing across savannah, woodland, lakes and wetlands. Depending on the final itinerary, additional destinations and experiences can be incorporated to create a comprehensive Rwanda journey. This safari is suitable for couples, families, solo travelers, photographers and first-time visitors who want to combine primate trekking with conventional African wildlife viewing.

Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Arrival in Kigali

Your 9 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari begins at Kigali International Airport. A private representative meets you on arrival and transfers you to your selected city hotel. Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of the day can be spent resting or beginning your introduction to Rwanda's capital.

Kigali is one of East Africa's most attractive and manageable cities. Its hills, modern neighborhoods, restaurants, cultural attractions and historical sites make it worthwhile to spend time here rather than immediately leaving for the national parks.

    Overnight in Kigali.

    Main Destination: Kigali

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

Kigali City Experience – Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, begin a guided Kigali city experience. Travelers interested in Rwanda's modern history may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Cultural markets, art galleries and selected viewpoints can also be incorporated according to your interests.

After the city tour, begin the scenic journey north toward Volcanoes National Park. The road passes through Rwanda's rolling agricultural landscapes and busy rural communities. As you approach Musanze, the Virunga volcanoes begin to dominate the skyline.

Check into your selected lodge near Volcanoes National Park. Your guide will brief you about the following morning's gorilla trekking experience and advise you about clothing, equipment and departure time.

  3. Day 03

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake early, have breakfast and transfer to the designated gorilla trekking briefing point. Park officials explain the rules governing encounters with mountain gorillas and allocate visitors to habituated gorilla families. You then enter the forest with experienced trackers, guides and ranger personnel.

    Trekking Mountain Gorillas

The duration of your trek depends on the gorillas' location. Some families may be reached relatively quickly, while others require several hours of walking through steep, muddy or densely vegetated terrain.

Hiring a porter is highly recommended. Porters can carry your bag and camera equipment and provide valuable assistance on difficult sections. When trackers locate the gorillas, your guide will instruct you how to approach.

Seeing a mountain gorilla family in the wild is an extraordinary experience. You may watch adults feeding, mothers caring for infants, juveniles playing and the dominant silverback monitoring the group. After the regulated viewing period, trek back to the starting point and return to your lodge.

Spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing.

  4. Day 04

Golden Monkeys or Virunga Cultural Experience

Today provides flexibility. One popular option is golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkeys inhabit the park's bamboo forests and are noticeably more energetic than mountain gorillas. They leap through vegetation, forage among bamboo stems and provide excellent photographic opportunities.

Alternatively, travelers can choose an appropriate cultural or community experience in the Musanze region. Guests who prefer a slower schedule may simply enjoy the lodge and views of the Virunga Mountains.

This additional day ensures you experience Volcanoes National Park as a destination rather than simply arriving for one gorilla trek and immediately leaving.

  5. Day 05

Volcanoes National Park – Kigali or Eastern Rwanda

After breakfast, leave the Virunga region and begin traveling toward eastern Rwanda. Depending on the chosen schedule, the journey can include a stop or overnight in Kigali before continuing toward Akagera National Park.

This routing creates a comfortable transition between Rwanda's mountain environment and its savannah landscapes. Your guide can incorporate suitable stops for meals, photography and sightseeing. Arrive at your selected accommodation and relax.

  6. Day 06

Transfer to Akagera National Park – Afternoon Game Drive

Continue to Akagera National Park. The scenery changes considerably as you travel east, becoming warmer and more open. Enter the park and begin your first game drive.

Akagera protects an impressive combination of rolling savannah, woodland, wetlands and lakes. Possible wildlife sightings include elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, topis, waterbucks and warthogs. Predators are also present, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Drive to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

    Main Destination: Akagera National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  7. Day 07

    Full-Day Akagera Wildlife Safari

Spend the day exploring Akagera National Park. An early morning start can be particularly rewarding because temperatures are cooler and many animals are active. Your guide will select routes according to wildlife movements, road conditions and recent sightings.

    Animals in Akagera National Park

    Wildlife may include:

    • African elephants
    • Cape buffaloes
    • Giraffes
    • Zebras
    • Impalas
    • Waterbucks
    • Topis
    • Warthogs
    • Baboons
    • Vervet monkeys
    • Hippos
    • Crocodiles

Akagera also supports lions, leopards and rhinos. The park's varied habitats make game drives interesting even when particular animals remain elusive. Birdwatchers will appreciate the wide range of savannah, wetland and water-associated species.

Return to your lodge after a full day of wildlife viewing.

  8. Day 08

Akagera Game Drive and Optional Boat Safari

Enjoy another day in Akagera. Having more than one full day in the park greatly improves your opportunity to explore different areas and search for species missed earlier. A morning game drive can be followed by an optional boat safari where available.

    Boat Safari Experience

A boat excursion offers a different perspective from vehicle-based game viewing. Hippos are among the main attractions, while crocodiles may be seen along the shoreline. Numerous waterbirds inhabit the park's lakes and wetland environments.

Mammals may also approach the water to drink. For photographers, the combination of reflections, birdlife and aquatic wildlife can create excellent opportunities. Return to your lodge for your final safari evening.

Good to Know

Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.

Why Choose Nine Days in Rwanda?

Nine days provide significantly greater flexibility than shorter Rwanda itineraries. You can experience gorilla trekking without rushing between parks, add complementary activities and spend sufficient time in Akagera to enjoy genuine game viewing rather than a single short drive.

This is especially beneficial for photographers, families and travelers who prefer a more relaxed pace.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

A valid Rwanda gorilla permit is required for each participant. The number of permits available each day is limited, so early booking is highly recommended. Permits are tied to specific trekking dates.

Current prices and regulations should always be confirmed when planning your safari. Once permit availability is established, accommodation and other activities can be arranged around the confirmed date.

Best Time for This Rwanda Safari

The 9 day rwanda gorilla & wildlife safari is available throughout the year. Drier periods are popular because mountain trails may be easier to negotiate and game viewing conditions in Akagera can be favorable. However, Rwanda remains rewarding during wetter months.

The countryside becomes intensely green, birdlife is excellent and dramatic cloud conditions can be attractive for photography. Volcanoes National Park is a rainforest environment, so waterproof clothing should be packed regardless of season.
