7 Day Uganda Gorillas & Chimpanzees

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and meet your safari representative. After completing airport formalities, transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is reserved for rest.

Travelers arriving earlier may participate in an optional excursion around Entebbe or simply enjoy the hotel facilities. Your safari guide will provide a briefing about the route through western Uganda and explain what to expect during the two trekking activities.

After breakfast, begin your journey toward western Uganda and Kibale National Park. The scenery changes as you travel through Uganda’s farming districts toward the green highlands surrounding Fort Portal. Tea plantations, small villages and rolling hills characterize parts of the region.

Stop for lunch along the way before continuing to your lodge near Kibale. Kibale is one of East Africa’s most important primate forests and supports an impressive range of monkey species alongside chimpanzees. Check into your lodge and spend the evening relaxing.

If you arrive early enough, an optional nature or community activity may be arranged.

After breakfast, transfer to the designated trekking center. Professional guides conduct a briefing about chimpanzee behavior, forest safety and responsible viewing. Enter Kibale’s tropical forest with your guide.

Chimpanzee tracking is often an energetic experience because the animals move through a large forest territory. You may hear chimpanzees long before seeing them. Their powerful calls and pant-hoots can travel through the forest, helping trackers determine their location.

Once the habituated community is found, observe the chimpanzees during the permitted viewing period. You may see individuals grooming, feeding, resting or moving through the canopy. Mothers may carry young chimpanzees, while adult males sometimes display or vocalize dramatically.

Chimpanzees live in complex communities, and their social interactions are one of the most interesting aspects of the experience. Other primates may also be encountered during the walk. After trekking, return to your lodge for lunch.

Depending on your selected itinerary, you may take an optional afternoon walk in a nearby wetland or community area.

Enjoy breakfast before leaving Kibale and traveling south toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This is one of the most scenic transfer days of the safari.

Depending on the selected route, you may travel past landscapes associated with Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Albertine Rift before entering the southwestern highlands. Lunch is arranged along the route.

As you approach Bwindi, open landscapes gradually give way to forest-covered ridges and cultivated mountain slopes. Arrive at your lodge near the gorilla trekking sector indicated on your permit. Bwindi has several trekking sectors, and accommodation is selected according to the location of your confirmed permit.

Spend the evening preparing your hiking clothing, boots and daypack. Your guide will explain the next morning’s arrangements.

Today is the major highlight of your 7 Day Uganda Gorillas & Chimpanzees safari. Wake early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the relevant Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point. Park staff explain trekking procedures and the regulations designed to protect both visitors and gorillas.

You will then be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and begin the trek. Bwindi is a dense mountainous forest, so trekking conditions can vary considerably. Mountain gorillas move naturally through their territory. The time required to reach them depends on where the family has traveled.

Your group may trek for several hours over uneven ground. A porter can carry your bag and help on difficult sections, and hiring one is highly recommended. During the walk, the ranger can explain aspects of the forest ecosystem and point out interesting plants, birds or signs of other wildlife.

Eventually, trackers will signal that the gorillas are close. Approach quietly and follow all instructions from your guide. Standard gorilla trekking normally allows visitors up to one hour with the habituated family.

During this extraordinary period, watch the gorillas feed, rest and interact. A dominant silverback may sit quietly near the group, while juveniles climb and play around surrounding vegetation. Infants often remain close to their mothers.

The similarities between gorillas and humans are especially striking when you observe their facial expressions and family interactions from close range. After the permitted viewing period, leave the gorillas and trek back to the trailhead. Meet your driver and return to the lodge.

After two major primate trekking experiences, today offers a more relaxed pace. Enjoy breakfast at the lodge and take time to appreciate the forest environment. An optional community visit can be arranged depending on your interests.

These experiences provide opportunities to learn about communities living near Bwindi and how tourism can support local livelihoods. You may meet craft makers, farmers or cultural performers and gain a broader perspective on life around the national park.

Travelers interested in nature can instead arrange a guided walk or spend time birdwatching. Bwindi is an outstanding destination for birdlife, butterflies and forest flora. The afternoon is available for rest and photography.

After breakfast, check out and begin your journey back toward Entebbe. Travel through southwestern Uganda and continue across the country with stops for lunch and refreshments. If flight timing allows, stop at the Equator for photographs and souvenir shopping.

Proceed to Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight or to your hotel if you are extending your Uganda stay. Your 7 Day Uganda Gorillas & Chimpanzees safari concludes after experiencing two of Africa’s most remarkable primate species.

Gorilla Trekking Versus Chimpanzee Trekking

Experiencing both gorillas and chimpanzees within one itinerary highlights the remarkable behavioral differences between these great apes. Mountain gorillas generally live in cohesive family groups dominated by a silverback. Once located, the family may remain within a relatively small area while feeding and resting.

Chimpanzees often behave much more dynamically. They live in communities that frequently divide into smaller groups, and individuals may travel rapidly through the forest. Chimpanzee tracking can therefore involve following calls and movements through the trees.

The two activities complement each other extremely well.

Why Visit Kibale National Park?

Kibale is widely regarded as Uganda’s leading chimpanzee destination. The park contains a rich tropical forest ecosystem and is known for its concentration and diversity of primates. In addition to chimpanzees, visitors may encounter several species of monkeys during forest activities.

The surrounding area is also scenic, with tea plantations, wetlands and crater landscapes.

Both activities require valid trekking permits. Availability can determine the precise dates and routing of the safari. Gorilla permits are particularly limited, so we recommend confirming them as early as possible.
