Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport, where your private guide welcomes you to Rwanda. Transfer to your selected hotel and settle in. Depending on your arrival time, you can spend the remainder of the day relaxing or begin exploring Kigali.

Rwanda's capital is clean, hilly and easy to incorporate into the beginning or end of a safari. Guests arriving early may choose a city orientation or dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Kigali.

    Main Destination: Kigali

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

Kigali City Experience – Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, explore selected Kigali attractions. A city tour can include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, cultural centers, art galleries or local markets according to your interests. Afterward, leave Kigali and travel north toward Volcanoes National Park.

The scenic drive passes through Rwanda's characteristic rolling hills and productive agricultural countryside. As you approach Musanze, the massive peaks of the Virunga Mountains begin to dominate the skyline. Arrive at your lodge, check in and prepare for the following morning's gorilla trek.

Your guide will explain the expected schedule and recommended equipment.

  3. Day 03

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Today is one of the major highlights of the 7 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari. After an early breakfast, drive to the designated gorilla trekking briefing point. Park officials explain rules designed to protect both visitors and gorillas.

You will then be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and enter the forest with guides and trackers.

    Gorilla Trekking Experience

The trek varies in length depending on the gorillas' location. Mountain gorillas move freely throughout their habitat, so there is no fixed route or trekking duration. Trails can be wet, steep and muddy.

A porter is highly recommended to carry personal equipment and assist where terrain becomes challenging. When the trackers locate your gorilla family, follow the guide's instructions as you approach. The encounter provides a remarkable opportunity to watch mountain gorillas behaving naturally.

You may see the silverback monitoring the family, adult females feeding and young gorillas playing around the vegetation. After the regulated observation period, trek back to the starting point. Return to your lodge and spend the afternoon relaxing.

    Main Destination: Volcanoes National Park

  4. Day 04

Optional Golden Monkey Experience – Return Toward Kigali

After breakfast, you can undertake an optional golden monkey tracking experience before leaving the Virunga region. Golden monkeys inhabit the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park and provide a very different primate experience from gorilla trekking. They are considerably smaller, faster and more energetic.

Alternatively, you may choose a cultural activity or simply enjoy a relaxed morning at your lodge. Later, begin the journey back toward Kigali or another strategically selected overnight location depending on the preferred routing toward Akagera National Park.

This flexible day prevents the itinerary from becoming unnecessarily rushed.

  5. Day 05

Transfer to Akagera National Park – Afternoon Wildlife Viewing

After breakfast, continue east toward Akagera National Park. The landscape changes as you leave Rwanda's mountainous regions and approach the warmer eastern savannah. Arrive at Akagera and begin your introduction to Rwanda's classic safari environment.

Depending on arrival time, undertake an afternoon game drive. Your guide will search for wildlife across woodland, open plains and areas near water. Possible sightings include giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, antelopes, warthogs and numerous bird species.

Arrive at your lodge for dinner and overnight.

    Main Destination: Akagera National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  6. Day 06

    Full-Day Akagera National Park Safari

Spend a full day exploring Akagera National Park. An early start increases the amount of time available for wildlife viewing. The park's varied terrain makes each game drive interesting.

    Wildlife to Look For

    Akagera supports species including:

    • African elephants
    • Cape buffaloes
    • Giraffes
    • Zebras
    • Impalas
    • Waterbucks
    • Topis
    • Warthogs
    • Baboons
    • Vervet monkeys
    • Hippos
    • Crocodiles

Lions, leopards and rhinos are also found in the park. As with all authentic wildlife safaris, sightings are never guaranteed. Your guide will use experience and available information to explore productive wildlife areas.

    Optional Boat Safari

A boat safari can add another dimension to your Akagera experience. From the water, you may observe hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and mammals approaching the shoreline. The peaceful lake environment contrasts with game drives and is particularly attractive to photographers and birdwatchers.

Return to your lodge after a full day in the park.

    Main Destination: Akagera National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation Options

    Same as previous day

  7. Day 07

Morning Game Drive – Return to Kigali

Wake early for your final Akagera game drive. Morning conditions can be excellent for wildlife activity and photography. Search for species that may have been missed previously while enjoying the landscape one final time.

Afterward, exit Akagera and begin the journey back to Kigali. Depending on your departure schedule, transfer directly to Kigali International Airport or to your city hotel. This concludes your 7 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari.

Good to Know

Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.

Why Choose a Seven-Day Rwanda Safari?

Seven days provide a comfortable amount of time to experience two of Rwanda's most important national parks. Shorter itineraries can also combine Volcanoes and Akagera, but a one-week safari allows more time for game viewing, relaxation and complementary activities.

The additional days also reduce the pressure to undertake long transfers immediately after strenuous gorilla trekking. This makes the itinerary particularly attractive for couples, photographers, mature travelers and visitors who prefer a balanced pace.

Mountain Gorillas of Volcanoes National Park

Mountain gorilla trekking is the centerpiece of most Rwanda safaris. These endangered great apes live in the forests of the Virunga Mountains and are visited under strict conservation regulations. The regulated permit system limits the number of visitors and helps manage tourism pressure on the gorillas.

Because permits are date-specific and limited, securing your trekking date should be one of the first steps when planning the safari.

Wildlife Safari in Akagera

Akagera demonstrates that Rwanda offers far more than primate trekking. Its open landscapes provide opportunities for traditional game drives and encounters with many recognizable African mammals. The park is also notable for its lakes and extensive wetlands.

For birders, Akagera adds an entirely different collection of habitats and species to those found in the Virunga highlands. Combining the two parks therefore creates a much more varied wildlife holiday.

Best Time for a 7 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari

The 7 day rwanda gorilla & wildlife safari can be arranged throughout the year. Drier periods are often preferred because gorilla trekking trails can be easier and game viewing in Akagera can be productive. Wetter periods offer lush landscapes and dramatic photographic scenery.

Because Volcanoes National Park is a high-altitude rainforest, rain is possible during any month. Travelers should therefore pack waterproof equipment regardless of season.

Gorilla Permits

Every traveler participating in gorilla trekking requires a valid permit. Gorilla permits are limited and can sell out during popular travel periods. We recommend confirming permit availability before committing to non-refundable accommodation.

Current permit prices and rules should be verified when you book.

What to Pack

Your packing list should accommodate both cool mountain conditions and warmer savannah environments. Useful items include:

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long trekking trousers
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Rain jacket
  • Trekking gloves
  • Gaiters
  • Comfortable game-drive clothing
  • Warm layer
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Sun protection
  • Insect repellent
  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Spare batteries
  • Small daypack
  • Drinking bottle

Porters are strongly recommended for the gorilla trek.

Accommodation Options

The safari can be customized around your budget. In Kigali, options range from comfortable city hotels to international luxury properties. The Volcanoes region offers guesthouses, mid-range lodges and exceptional high-end accommodation.

Akagera has safari-focused properties allowing travelers to remain close to wildlife activities. Your accommodation combination can therefore be tailored without altering the main safari structure.

Combine Rwanda with Uganda

Travelers with additional time can continue into Uganda. Popular extensions include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for another gorilla trekking experience, Queen Elizabeth National Park for wildlife and boat safaris, and Kibale National Park for chimpanzee trekking.

A Rwanda and Uganda combination is particularly attractive for visitors who want a more extensive East African wildlife journey.
