Day 01
Arrival in Kigali
Your 6 Day Uganda Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari begins when you arrive in Kigali. Meet your private safari guide and transfer to your selected hotel. Depending on your arrival schedule, spend the remainder of the day relaxing or exploring Rwanda's capital.
Kigali offers attractive restaurants, local markets, art galleries and important historical attractions. An overnight stay allows you to recover from international travel before beginning the journey toward the Virunga region.

Day 02
Kigali City Experience – Transfer Toward Uganda
After breakfast, enjoy a guided Kigali experience. A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial can provide important historical context. Depending on your interests, you may also explore local markets or cultural attractions.
Later, begin the scenic drive north toward the Rwanda-Uganda border. The route passes through beautiful hills, farmland and increasingly dramatic mountain landscapes. After completing border formalities, continue into southwestern Uganda.
Depending on your confirmed permits and final route, transfer toward Bwindi or Mgahinga. Arrive at your selected lodge and check in. Enjoy dinner and prepare for your first primate activity.

Day 03
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Wake early and transfer to the appropriate gorilla trekking briefing point. Park officials explain trekking rules, conservation procedures and the behavior expected during encounters with mountain gorillas. You are then allocated a habituated gorilla family and enter the forest with guides and trackers.
Trekking the Mountain Forest
The gorillas' natural movements determine trekking conditions. They may be relatively close to the starting point or several hours away. Trails can include steep slopes, mud, thick vegetation and uneven ground.
Hiring a porter is highly recommended. The porter can carry your backpack, water and camera equipment while helping you navigate difficult sections.
The Gorilla Encounter
Eventually, trackers will locate your assigned family. Follow the ranger's instructions as you approach. A mountain gorilla encounter is remarkably intimate.
You may watch the dominant silverback feeding or resting, females tending to infants and young gorillas climbing or playing. Their size is impressive, but many travelers are equally struck by their calm behavior, expressions and social relationships.
After the regulated viewing period, begin the trek back to the park starting point. Return to your lodge for lunch or relaxation. Spend the afternoon resting after the physical demands of trekking.

Day 04
Golden Monkey Tracking
Today you experience a very different primate. Golden monkey tracking may be arranged in a suitable Virunga destination according to the confirmed itinerary and current permit arrangements. Golden monkeys are small, highly active primates with distinctive golden-orange coloration.
Golden Monkey Tracking Experience
After your briefing, enter the bamboo forest with guides and trackers. Unlike mountain gorillas, which may remain in one area for long periods, golden monkeys often move rapidly through the vegetation. They leap between bamboo stems, feed on plant material and interact energetically within their troop.
The experience is often faster paced than gorilla trekking and can present an enjoyable challenge for photographers. Once the habituated troop is located, observe and photograph the monkeys according to park regulations. After tracking, return to your lodge.
The afternoon can be used for relaxation or another optional local activity.

Day 05
Virunga Region – Cultural or Scenic Experience
The fifth day provides valuable flexibility. Rather than undertaking major transfers immediately after two trekking activities, you can spend more time enjoying the Virunga region. Depending on the final route, possible activities may include:
- Community or cultural visit
- Scenic nature experience
- Local village walk
- Additional forest activity
- Relaxation at the lodge
- Photography around the highlands
Travelers particularly interested in primates may also discuss the possibility of another permit-based activity if availability and schedule allow. This slower day makes the six-day itinerary more comfortable than shorter cross-border safari options.

Day 06
Return to Kigali
After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the drive back toward Rwanda. Complete immigration procedures at the border and continue through Rwanda's beautiful countryside toward Kigali. Depending on your international flight schedule, transfer directly to Kigali International Airport or to a city hotel.
This completes your 6 Day Uganda Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari.
Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys – Two Different Experiences
One of the greatest strengths of this itinerary is the contrast between the two primates.
Mountain Gorillas
Mountain gorillas are large, powerful and primarily terrestrial. A gorilla encounter often involves observing subtle behavior: feeding, grooming, resting and interactions between family members. The presence of a fully grown silverback is particularly impressive.
Golden Monkeys
Golden monkeys are much smaller and faster. Their movements through bamboo forest make the experience more active. They may leap between vegetation, forage rapidly and rarely remain still for long.
Seeing both species provides a broader understanding of primate life in the Virunga ecosystem.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Bwindi or Mgahinga for Gorilla Trekking?
Both offer excellent gorilla encounters.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi contains several trekking sectors and numerous habituated mountain gorilla families. Its dense rainforest and steep landscape provide a classic Uganda gorilla trekking setting.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga lies in the Virunga Mountains and can be particularly convenient for a trip combining gorillas with golden monkeys. Its bamboo zones and volcanic scenery make it one of Uganda's most visually dramatic primate destinations.
The exact park should be selected according to permit availability and the most practical itinerary.
Gorilla Trekking Permit
A valid Uganda gorilla permit is required for every trekker. Permits are issued for specific dates and locations. Early booking is strongly recommended because availability is limited.
Your confirmed permit will determine the trekking sector and therefore influence lodge selection. Current rates and regulations should always be checked at the time of booking.
Golden Monkey Permit
Golden monkey tracking requires a separate permit or activity booking. Availability, starting points and procedures depend on the park and current conservation authority requirements.
This should be coordinated at the same time as your gorilla permit to ensure the two activities fit comfortably within the six-day itinerary.
Best Time for the Safari
The 6 day uganda rwanda gorilla & golden monkey safari can operate throughout the year. Drier periods are popular because forest trails may be easier. Nevertheless, the Virunga region and Bwindi are naturally wet mountain environments.
Rainfall can occur at any time. Travelers should prepare for mud and changing weather regardless of season.
Trekking Fitness
Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding. Golden monkey tracking is often less strenuous, but the forest terrain still requires appropriate footwear and reasonable mobility. Regular walking before travel can improve your experience.
A porter is strongly recommended for the gorilla trek.
