Day 01
Arrival in Kigali
Your 5 Day Uganda Rwanda Gorilla Safari begins at Kigali International Airport. Meet your private guide and transfer to your selected Kigali hotel. Depending on your arrival schedule, enjoy time at leisure or begin exploring Rwanda's capital.
Kigali offers a wide range of activities for visitors with an early arrival. You may explore local markets, cultural attractions, art galleries or selected historical sites. An overnight stay in Kigali allows you to recover from your international journey before beginning the cross-border safari.
Main Destination: Kigali

Day 02
Kigali City Experience – Transfer to Uganda
After breakfast, you can enjoy a short Kigali city tour before leaving for Uganda. Travelers interested in history may include the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Afterward, begin the drive through Rwanda's famous rolling hills toward the Ugandan border.
The scenery becomes increasingly mountainous as you approach the Virunga region. Complete border formalities before continuing into southwestern Uganda.
Scenic Southwestern Uganda
The border region of Uganda is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Expect steep hills, terraced farms, mountain scenery and densely cultivated valleys. Depending on your confirmed gorilla permit, continue toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
If trekking in Bwindi, your exact sector determines the appropriate accommodation. Arrive at your lodge and settle in. Your guide will explain the following morning's trekking schedule.
Have dinner and prepare your equipment before an early night.
Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Day 03
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Wake early, have breakfast and transfer to the gorilla trekking briefing point. After registration, ranger personnel explain trekking rules and allocate visitors to habituated gorilla families. You then enter the forest with a ranger guide and tracking team.
The Gorilla Trek
The trekking experience is unpredictable in the best possible way. Mountain gorillas move through the forest according to food availability and other natural factors. The trackers use signs from the previous day and their knowledge of the gorillas' movements to locate them.
Your walk may take you through steep hills, tangled vegetation and muddy forest paths. A porter is highly recommended. Once the gorillas are located, your group approaches under the ranger's instructions.
Your Time with the Gorillas
Mountain gorillas live in close social groups, often led by a dominant silverback. During your regulated observation period, you may watch the silverback resting, adults feeding, females grooming or juveniles playing.
Young gorillas can be particularly entertaining as they climb branches and interact with other members of the family. Photography is possible, but flash should not be used. After the encounter, begin the trek back to the starting point and return to your lodge.
Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing.

Day 04
Optional Second Primate or Cultural Experience
One advantage of a five-day itinerary is the flexibility to include another experience after gorilla trekking.
Golden Monkey Tracking
If staying near Mgahinga, golden monkey tracking can be an excellent addition. Golden monkeys inhabit bamboo forest on the Virunga slopes. They are fast, colorful and highly active, creating a completely different experience from mountain gorillas.
Community Experience
Travelers interested in local culture can visit communities around the gorilla parks. A well-managed community experience can provide insight into local livelihoods, traditions and the relationship between tourism and conservation.
Second Gorilla Trek
For travelers whose priority is mountain gorillas, a second trek may be possible if permits are available. A second encounter may involve another family, another trekking route and completely different behavior.
Relaxation
You may also prefer a slower day at your lodge after the physical demands of the gorilla trek. The itinerary can be structured according to your interests.
Main Destination: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Day 05
Uganda – Kigali – Departure
After breakfast, begin the return drive to Rwanda. Travel through southwestern Uganda and cross the border after completing immigration procedures. Continue to Kigali.
Depending on your flight schedule, your guide can transfer you directly to Kigali International Airport or to your hotel. Additional Kigali stops may be possible for travelers departing later. This concludes your 5 Day Uganda Rwanda Gorilla Safari.
Bwindi Gorilla Trekking
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to multiple habituated mountain gorilla families. The park's different trekking sectors make careful itinerary planning essential. Your accommodation should be located near the sector specified on your permit.
Attempting to stay in the wrong part of Bwindi can result in long pre-dawn drives and unnecessary logistical complications. Bwindi itself is an extraordinary forest, with steep terrain and immense biological diversity.
Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies within Uganda's section of the Virunga Mountains. Its volcanic backdrop and bamboo habitats make it visually distinct from Bwindi. The park is particularly attractive to travelers who want to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkeys or mountain hiking.
Its proximity to Rwanda also makes Mgahinga suitable for Kigali-based safari itineraries.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
Every person trekking mountain gorillas requires an official Uganda gorilla permit. Permits are limited and date-specific. Demand can be high during popular travel periods, so early reservation is strongly recommended.
The permit location also determines your trekking sector. Because permit rates and policies may change, always confirm current official information at the time of booking.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Why Choose Five Days?
A three-day Uganda Rwanda gorilla safari is efficient but fast. With five days, you have more breathing room. You can spend your first night in Kigali, enjoy a relaxed transfer to Uganda and keep an entire extra day for another activity.
This makes the itinerary better suited to travelers who want the gorilla experience to feel like a genuine holiday rather than a rushed excursion.
Best Time to Travel
The 5 day uganda rwanda gorilla safari is possible throughout the year. Drier periods are popular because trekking trails may be less muddy. However, mountain rainforest weather remains unpredictable.
Rain is possible at any time. Wetter periods can make trekking more difficult but also create lush scenery and excellent forest atmosphere.
Cross-Border Travel
The safari involves international border crossings. Travelers should check current entry requirements for both Uganda and Rwanda. Important considerations can include:
- Passport validity
- Visa requirements
- Re-entry conditions
- Immigration documentation
- Health entry rules
Requirements vary by nationality and can change. Your international departure flight should also be scheduled with enough time for road and border delays.
Fitness for Gorilla Trekking
A reasonable level of fitness is useful. You do not need to be a professional athlete, but you should be prepared to walk over uneven forest terrain. The location of the gorillas determines the length and difficulty of the trek.
Porters are highly recommended, including for travelers who consider themselves fit.
