Safari Overview

A 5 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimpanzee Safari brings together two of Uganda's most sought-after primate encounters in one compact private safari. The journey is designed for travelers who want to trek mountain gorillas and chimpanzees while making the most of a relatively limited amount of time in Uganda.

Uganda is particularly suited to primate-focused safaris. Mountain gorillas inhabit the forests of southwestern Uganda, while several forests support habituated chimpanzee communities. Depending on permit availability and the final routing, chimpanzee trekking may be arranged in a suitable destination such as Kibale Forest or another approved chimpanzee trekking location.

With private transportation, carefully selected accommodation and prearranged trekking permits, this itinerary provides a convenient way to discover why Uganda is one of Africa's leading primate destinations.

Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Arrival at Entebbe International Airport

Welcome to Uganda. After arriving at Entebbe International Airport, meet your safari representative and transfer to your hotel. This first day is intentionally relaxed, allowing you to recover from your international journey before beginning the primate adventure.

If you arrive earlier in the day, optional activities around Entebbe may be arranged. Your guide will brief you about the journey ahead, including expected driving conditions, trekking preparations and the equipment you should carry.

    Main Destination: Entebbe

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

    Transfer to the Chimpanzee Region

After breakfast, depart Entebbe and travel toward western Uganda. As you leave the urban areas, the landscape gradually changes to farmland, tea-growing areas, villages and rolling hills. Your guide will explain aspects of Uganda's geography, wildlife and everyday life along the route.

Arrive in the selected chimpanzee trekking region and check into your lodge. If time permits, optional nature or community activities may be available in the afternoon. Otherwise, relax at the lodge and prepare for your chimpanzee trek.

    Main Destination: Kibale National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  3. Day 03

Chimpanzee Trekking and Transfer toward Bwindi

After breakfast, report to the designated briefing point for your chimpanzee trekking experience. Professional guides explain forest regulations and what to expect before leading participants into the forest.

Chimpanzees are highly active primates. Unlike gorillas, which are frequently observed feeding or resting at ground level, chimpanzees often move rapidly through the forest and may spend considerable time in the canopy.

Their calls can sometimes be heard before they are seen. Listening to pant-hoots echoing through the trees can be one of the most exciting moments of the trek. Once the habituated chimpanzee community is located, you will observe their behavior for the period permitted under current park regulations.

The forest may also provide opportunities to encounter other primates, birds and butterflies. After completing the trek, meet your driver-guide and continue toward southwestern Uganda and the Bwindi region. The journey introduces you to increasingly dramatic scenery as you approach the mountain gorilla habitat.

Arrive at your lodge, enjoy dinner and prepare for the following day's gorilla trek.

Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  4. Day 04

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Today you experience one of the world's most remarkable wildlife encounters. Wake early, have breakfast and transfer to the appropriate Bwindi trekking headquarters. After registration, Uganda Wildlife Authority staff conduct a detailed briefing.

You will then join your assigned trekking group and enter the forest with ranger guides. Mountain gorillas range freely within the forest, meaning the duration and difficulty of every trek is different. Some families may be found relatively quickly, while others require several hours of hiking across forested slopes.

The anticipation is part of the experience. When your trackers locate the gorilla family, approach quietly and follow your ranger's instructions.

During the permitted viewing period, watch how individual gorillas interact. A large silverback may remain watchful over the family while females feed and youngsters climb, play or investigate their surroundings.

Because gorillas share many behavioral characteristics with humans, watching them at close range can be profoundly memorable. Afterward, return through the forest to the starting point and meet your driver.

Spend the remainder of the day relaxing at your lodge. Depending on trekking duration, an optional community visit may be possible.

Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Same as previous day

  5. Day 05

    Return to Entebbe

After breakfast, check out and begin your journey back toward Entebbe. Travel through southwestern and central Uganda with stops for lunch and refreshments. Depending on your flight schedule, you may stop around the Equator for photographs and souvenir shopping.

Continue to Entebbe International Airport, where your guide will drop you off for your departure flight. Your 5 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimpanzee Safari concludes with two exceptional primate encounters completed within one carefully planned journey.

    Gorilla and Chimpanzee Permits

Both major activities require permits, and their availability can determine the exact itinerary. Gorilla permits are particularly limited because visitor numbers around each habituated gorilla family are strictly controlled. Chimpanzee trekking is also regulated.

Early booking therefore gives us greater flexibility when coordinating both permits with suitable accommodation. Once your travel dates are known, permit availability should be checked before finalizing the safari.

    What Makes This Safari Special?

This itinerary is ideal for travelers whose main interest is primates rather than traditional big-game viewing. Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees are our closest wild relatives, yet the two experiences are remarkably different.

Gorilla trekking tends to involve carefully approaching a relatively cohesive family group. Chimpanzee tracking can feel more energetic because chimpanzees frequently travel through the forest, vocalize loudly and interact dynamically.

Experiencing both gives travelers a much broader appreciation of East Africa's great apes.

    What Should You Pack?

Good hiking footwear is essential. Trails can become muddy and slippery, particularly after rain. Pack long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, a lightweight rain jacket, gardening gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen and a comfortable daypack.

Carry sufficient drinking water and the packed lunch supplied for longer trekking days. A camera with spare batteries and adequate memory is recommended. Flash photography should not be used around primates.
