Day 01
Kigali – Volcanoes National Park
Your safari begins in Kigali, where your private guide meets you at Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed pickup point.
If your schedule allows, a Kigali city experience can be incorporated before leaving the capital. This may include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, cultural attractions or viewpoints around the city. You then travel north toward Musanze and Volcanoes National Park.
The drive introduces Rwanda's famous landscape of cultivated hills, valleys and small communities. As you approach the Virunga region, volcanic peaks begin to dominate the horizon. Arrive at your lodge and check in.
Your guide will discuss the following morning's gorilla trek and ensure you understand what clothing and equipment to prepare. Spend the night near Volcanoes National Park.

Day 02
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, transfer to the designated briefing area for your gorilla trekking experience. Park officials explain trekking procedures and conservation regulations before assigning visitors to habituated gorilla families. You then enter the forest with trackers, guides and ranger personnel.
Trekking Through Volcanoes National Park
The duration and difficulty of the trek vary because mountain gorillas move freely through their habitat. Some families may be located relatively close to the starting point. Others require several hours of hiking through steep, wet or muddy terrain.
A porter is strongly recommended. Besides carrying your backpack and camera equipment, porters can provide valuable assistance on difficult sections. When trackers locate the gorillas, follow your guide's instructions as you approach.
The encounter provides an extraordinary opportunity to watch mountain gorillas in their natural environment. You may observe the silverback resting nearby, females feeding and juveniles playing among the vegetation. After the regulated viewing period, trek back to the starting point and return to your lodge.
Spend the afternoon relaxing and reflecting on the experience.

Day 03
Volcanoes National Park – Akagera National Park
After breakfast, leave the Virunga Mountains and begin the journey toward Akagera National Park. The transfer takes you across Rwanda and provides an excellent opportunity to observe changing landscapes. Your guide can arrange appropriate rest and refreshment stops along the way.
As you approach eastern Rwanda, the mountainous scenery gradually gives way to warmer, lower landscapes characterized by woodland, savannah and wetlands. Arrive at Akagera National Park and check into your lodge. Depending on arrival time, an introductory game drive may be possible.
Akagera provides a striking contrast to the previous day's rainforest environment. Enjoy dinner and overnight in or near the park.

Day 04

Day 05
Akagera – Kigali
Enjoy breakfast and, depending on your schedule, undertake a final morning game drive. Morning wildlife viewing gives you another opportunity to search for species missed on the previous day. Afterward, exit Akagera and travel back to Kigali.
Your guide will transfer you to your hotel or Kigali International Airport according to your onward travel arrangements. This concludes your 5 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari.
Mountain Gorillas and Savannah Wildlife in One Safari
The greatest advantage of this itinerary is diversity. Volcanoes National Park and Akagera National Park could hardly be more different. The Virunga region is cool, mountainous and forested. Gorilla trekking is conducted on foot and focuses on an intimate encounter with one primate family.
Akagera is characterized by expansive views and traditional game drives. Rather than searching for one species, you travel through multiple habitats looking for a wide variety of mammals and birds. Experiencing both provides a more complete understanding of Rwanda's wildlife.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Wildlife You May See
Akagera supports an impressive variety of mammals, including:
- African elephants
- Cape buffaloes
- Giraffes
- Zebras
- Impalas
- Waterbucks
- Topis
- Warthogs
- Baboons
- Vervet monkeys
- Hippos
- Crocodiles
Lions, leopards and rhinos are also present, although wildlife sightings are always subject to natural movements and cannot be guaranteed. Akagera's lakes and wetlands also support exceptional birdlife.
A boat safari can be incorporated into the itinerary where desired and available, adding another perspective on the park's aquatic wildlife. Return to your lodge after a rewarding day of game viewing.
Gorilla Trekking Permit
A valid Rwanda gorilla trekking permit is required. Permit numbers are strictly controlled to reduce pressure on the gorillas and their habitat. Advance booking is therefore important, especially during popular travel periods.
Permit rates and policies can change, so current information should be confirmed when requesting your safari. Once your gorilla permit date is secured, the rest of the itinerary can be built around it.
Best Time for the Safari
The 5 day rwanda gorilla & wildlife safari is possible throughout the year. Drier periods are popular for gorilla trekking because forest trails may be less muddy. Dry conditions can also concentrate wildlife around water sources in Akagera. However, Rwanda's parks remain rewarding during wetter periods.
Rain transforms landscapes into lush green environments and can provide excellent photographic conditions. Volcanoes National Park is a rainforest environment, so travelers should carry waterproof equipment regardless of season.
What to Pack
You need equipment for both rainforest trekking and conventional game viewing. Recommended items include:
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Long trekking trousers
- Long-sleeved shirts
- Rain jacket or poncho
- Gardening or trekking gloves
- Gaiters
- Comfortable safari clothing
- Hat and sunglasses
- Sun protection
- Insect repellent
- Binoculars
- Camera
- Spare batteries
- Reusable water bottle
Bring layers because temperatures differ significantly between the Virunga highlands and Akagera.
Accommodation
The itinerary can be adapted to different budgets. Volcanoes National Park offers everything from practical guesthouses to exceptional luxury lodges overlooking the Virunga Mountains. Akagera also has several accommodation styles, including safari lodges and tented properties.
We recommend balancing comfort with convenient access to activities, especially when the itinerary involves early morning departures.
Extend Your Rwanda Safari
Travelers with additional time can add Nyungwe National Park for chimpanzee trekking, golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park or relaxation at Lake Kivu. The safari can also connect with Uganda for Bwindi gorilla trekking, Kibale chimpanzees and Queen Elizabeth National Park wildlife viewing.
