5 Day Bwindi & Queen Elizabeth Safari

After an early breakfast, meet your safari guide and begin the journey toward western Uganda. Leaving Kampala or Entebbe, travel through Uganda's increasingly rural countryside. The journey provides an excellent introduction to the country's agricultural landscapes, towns and communities.

Depending on the selected route and available time, stops can be made for refreshments, lunch and photography. Continue toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda's most diverse protected areas.

The park occupies a spectacular section of the Albertine Rift and includes open savannah, wetlands, crater landscapes, forests and lakes. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon or evening. If time permits, your guide may conduct an introductory game drive as you travel through the park.

Possible sightings include Uganda kobs, buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, waterbucks and various monkeys. Check into your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Wake early and prepare for a full day of wildlife experiences. Following breakfast or an early cup of coffee, depart for a morning game drive. The cooler morning hours can be particularly rewarding because many animals are active before temperatures rise.

Explore suitable game-viewing tracks while your driver-guide searches for wildlife. Queen Elizabeth National Park supports numerous large mammals, including African elephants, Cape buffaloes, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, bushbucks and warthogs.

Lions inhabit the park and may occasionally be seen resting in the grass or watching herds of antelopes. Leopards are also present but are naturally elusive. Return for lunch before proceeding to the Kazinga Channel for an afternoon boat safari.

The Kazinga Channel connects Lakes George and Edward and is one of the park's most famous wildlife areas. From the boat, you may observe large numbers of hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds. Elephants and buffaloes are sometimes seen approaching the channel to drink or cool themselves along the shoreline.

The boat safari provides a completely different perspective from a game drive and is particularly rewarding for photographers and birdwatchers. Return to your lodge after the cruise.

After breakfast, begin the journey toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Depending on your lodge location, gorilla permit sector and routing, you may travel through the southern areas of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Where conditions and itinerary allow, the drive can include wildlife viewing through the Ishasha area, famous for its population of tree-climbing lions. Although no wildlife sighting can be guaranteed, Ishasha provides another opportunity to search for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, topis and other animals.

Continue into the highlands surrounding Bwindi. The scenery changes dramatically. Open savannah gradually gives way to cultivated hills, valleys and densely forested mountains.

Bwindi is one of Africa's most biologically significant forests and is internationally famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. Arrive at your lodge near the appropriate gorilla trekking sector.

Spend the evening relaxing and preparing your trekking gear. Your guide will advise you about the next morning's departure time and what to carry.

Today is the highlight of your 5 Day Bwindi & Queen Elizabeth Safari. Wake early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the relevant Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point. Park staff explain gorilla trekking regulations, forest conditions and appropriate behavior during the encounter.

Trekkers are divided into groups and assigned to specific habituated gorilla families. Accompanied by ranger guides and trackers, enter Bwindi's dense rainforest.

The duration of the trek varies because mountain gorillas move freely throughout their territory. Depending on where your assigned family is located, you may trek for a relatively short period or several hours.

Trails can cross steep and muddy terrain, particularly after rainfall. Porters are normally available and can carry your backpack while helping you negotiate difficult sections. When trackers locate the gorillas, follow your ranger's instructions carefully.

You will normally be permitted to spend up to one hour observing the habituated family under standard gorilla trekking regulations. This hour can produce extraordinary moments.

You may watch a huge silverback feeding quietly, juveniles playing among vegetation, females caring for infants or younger gorillas investigating their surroundings. The proximity and similarities between gorilla and human behavior make this one of Africa's most emotionally powerful wildlife experiences.

After the permitted viewing period, leave the gorillas and trek back to the starting point. Meet your driver-guide and return to your lodge. If your trek finishes early enough, an optional community experience may be arranged.

After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey. Travel through the spectacular southwestern highlands before continuing toward central Uganda. Lunch will be arranged along the route. Depending on time, you may stop around the Equator for photographs, refreshments and souvenir shopping.

Continue toward Kampala or Entebbe. Travelers departing Uganda can be transferred directly to Entebbe International Airport, provided the flight departure time allows sufficient road-transfer contingency. This marks the end of your 5 Day Bwindi & Queen Elizabeth Safari.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking Permit

A gorilla trekking permit is essential and should be secured before the safari is finalized. Permits are issued for specific dates and trekking sectors. Because Bwindi has several trekking regions, the confirmed permit influences your accommodation and road routing.

Wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park adds an important traditional safari element to this itinerary. Possible wildlife includes elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, hippos, warthogs, bushbucks, baboons and several monkey species.

Predators include lions, leopards and spotted hyenas, although sightings are never guaranteed. The park is also exceptional for birdwatching, with habitats ranging from wetlands and lakeshores to savannah and woodland.
