Day 01
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
Meet your private safari driver-guide at your Kigali hotel, Kigali International Airport or another agreed pickup point. Begin traveling north toward Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. The road journey is an attraction in itself.
Rwanda’s cultivated hills, villages and valleys create beautiful scenery throughout much of the drive. As you approach northern Rwanda, the dramatic Virunga volcanoes become increasingly visible. Arrive in the Musanze region and check into your selected accommodation.
Afternoon around Volcanoes National Park
After lunch, spend the afternoon relaxing or participate in an optional community or cultural experience. This is also an excellent opportunity to prepare for the two trekking days ahead. Your guide will review the scheduled permits and confirm which primate activity takes place first.
Permit arrangements generally determine whether you trek gorillas or track golden monkeys on Day 2. Prepare sturdy hiking footwear, long trousers, long sleeves and rain protection. Accommodation: Musanze/Volcanoes National Park region Meal Plan: According to package

Day 02
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, transfer to the designated park briefing point. Complete registration and attend the ranger briefing. Visitors are allocated to habituated mountain gorilla families.
The briefing explains how to behave in the forest and what to do when the gorillas are encountered. Transfer to the relevant trailhead and begin trekking.
Through the Virunga Forest
The route may pass through farmland before entering bamboo and mountain vegetation. The length and difficulty of the trek depend on the location of the assigned family. Mountain gorillas move through their territory each day, so no operator can guarantee the exact trekking time.
Rain can make the trails muddy. A porter is therefore highly recommended. Porters can carry your bag, camera equipment or drinking water and help on steeper slopes.
Encountering the Mountain Gorillas
Eventually, trackers will indicate that the family is close. Follow your ranger quietly. The first gorilla may appear suddenly through vegetation, or you may gradually see several members feeding nearby.
Standard gorilla trekking normally allows visitors up to one hour with the habituated family. During this period, watch the silverback, adult females, juveniles and infants as they continue their natural activities. A silverback can weigh substantially more than a human yet often appears remarkably calm.
Juveniles may climb bamboo, play or move inquisitively around other family members. Females may feed while keeping infants nearby. The behavioral similarities between gorillas and humans are among the aspects that make the experience so memorable.
Photography is allowed, but flash should not be used.
Return to the Lodge
After your viewing period, leave the family and begin trekking back to the trailhead. Meet your driver-guide and return to your lodge. Spend the afternoon resting after the trek.
Enjoy dinner and prepare for the next morning’s golden monkey activity. Accommodation: Musanze/Volcanoes National Park region Meal Plan: Breakfast, packed lunch where appropriate and dinner

Day 03
Golden Monkey Tracking and Return to Kigali
Wake early for breakfast and transfer to the appropriate briefing point. Today’s activity focuses on golden monkeys, one of the Virunga region’s most distinctive primates. After receiving instructions from your guides, begin walking toward the monkeys’ habitat.
Golden monkeys are frequently associated with bamboo zones. Unlike mountain gorillas, they can move very quickly. You may watch individuals leap between bamboo stems, feed on vegetation or chase one another through the forest.
The activity can be lively and highly rewarding.
Golden Monkey Photography
Golden monkeys are beautiful photographic subjects because of their distinctive golden-orange coloration. However, they are considerably more active than gorillas. Photographers should be prepared to react quickly.
Your guides help position the group where the monkeys can be observed without interfering with their natural movements. Rather than focusing entirely on photographs, take time to watch the troop’s social behavior.
Complete the Tracking Experience
After completing the regulated golden monkey activity, walk back toward the starting point and meet your driver. Change footwear or clothing if needed. Enjoy lunch around Musanze before beginning the journey back to Kigali.
Travel through Rwanda’s hilly countryside and arrive in the city later in the day. Transfer to Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location. This concludes your 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari.
Why Combine Gorillas and Golden Monkeys?
Combining the two activities demonstrates just how diverse the Virunga primate community is. Mountain gorillas are large, terrestrial great apes with close family relationships. Golden monkeys are smaller and far more agile.
The slower intensity of a gorilla encounter contrasts beautifully with the movement and energy of a golden monkey troop. Travelers who are particularly interested in primates often find the combination more rewarding than gorilla trekking alone.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Gorilla Permit and Golden Monkey Arrangements
Both activities must be booked and coordinated before travel. Gorilla permits are particularly limited because only controlled numbers of visitors are allowed around habituated families. Permit dates should therefore be confirmed before non-refundable accommodation is booked.
We can coordinate both activities within the three-day itinerary.
Physical Fitness
Both activities involve walking in mountain terrain. The gorilla trek is generally the more physically demanding because the assigned family may be located several hours from the starting point. Golden monkey tracking can also involve uneven terrain.
Regular walking before travel can improve your comfort.
Porters
Hiring a porter is recommended, especially for gorilla trekking. Porters can carry water, camera equipment and your backpack. They can also assist when the terrain becomes steep or slippery.
Using porter services contributes directly to community livelihoods around the national park.
What to Wear
For both trekking days, wear:
- Strong hiking boots
- Long trousers
- Long-sleeved shirt
- Hiking socks
- Lightweight waterproof jacket
- Gardening gloves
The forest can be wet and muddy even during comparatively dry periods.
What to Carry
A small daypack should contain only essential items. Useful equipment includes drinking water, rain protection, camera, spare battery, insect repellent and sunscreen. Bring adequate memory cards if photography is an important part of your trip.
Accommodation Options
The Volcanoes National Park region offers accommodation across several categories. Budget and value-oriented lodges are suitable for travelers prioritizing the trekking experiences. Mid-range properties provide additional comfort.
Luxury lodges offer premium accommodation, refined dining and personalized service in outstanding locations. The itinerary can be priced according to your preferred category.
Best Time for Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trekking
Both activities normally operate throughout the year. Comparatively drier periods are popular because walking conditions may be easier. However, Volcanoes National Park is a mountain environment and rainfall can occur at any time.
The wetter months offer lush vegetation and beautiful atmospheric scenery.
Extend Your Rwanda Safari
Travelers with additional time can extend the journey to include Kigali sightseeing, other Rwanda national parks or additional nights around Volcanoes National Park. A longer stay can also reduce the pressure of coordinating activities around arrival or departure flights.
