Day 01
Transfer to Bwindi
The safari begins with pickup by your private driver-guide. Travelers starting in Entebbe or Kampala head southwest through Uganda. The drive is substantial, but it reveals a broad cross-section of the country's countryside.
Stops can be included for refreshments, lunch and photography. Travelers beginning in Kigali enter Uganda through a suitable border crossing and continue toward the correct Bwindi sector.
Bwindi's Trekking Sectors
Bwindi does not operate from one central trekking gate. Different gorilla families are accessed through several sectors. This makes permit allocation extremely important.
A lodge close to one trekking sector may be several hours from another. Your safari operator should therefore confirm the gorilla permit first and then select appropriate accommodation. This is one of the most important logistical principles for any Bwindi safari.
Arrival at the Lodge
Guests arrive in the afternoon or evening and check into their selected lodge. Budget, mid-range and luxury options are available around different Bwindi sectors. Dinner is normally served at the lodge.
The evening should remain relaxed. Your guide reviews the following morning's trekking schedule and ensures that all essential equipment is ready.

Day 02
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Breakfast is served early. Visitors transfer to the appropriate park headquarters and attend a briefing with Uganda Wildlife Authority staff. The briefing explains trekking rules, conservation requirements and health precautions.
Visitors are then organized into trekking groups. Porters are available and can be hired before entering the forest.
Trekking Through the Impenetrable Forest
Bwindi's name reflects the density of its vegetation. The terrain can include steep slopes, tangled plants, streams and muddy paths. Guides and trackers navigate the forest using extensive knowledge of gorilla movements.
Some trekkers may locate their gorilla family relatively quickly. Others may walk for several hours. The unpredictable duration is one reason visitors should dedicate the entire day to the activity.
The Gorilla Encounter
Once trackers locate the gorillas, visitors move closer under careful supervision. The family may contain a silverback, adult females, juveniles and infants. Gorillas often spend substantial time feeding.
Young animals may climb vegetation or play. The silverback typically presents an unforgettable sight because of his size and calm authority. Visitors are able to observe this behavior at close range while respecting official rules.

Day 03
Leave Bwindi
After breakfast, the safari continues toward the final destination. Travelers returning to Kampala or Entebbe have a substantial road journey. Those returning to Kigali follow the shorter regional cross-border route according to their trekking sector.
Some travelers may instead extend their safari toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Mburo.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Photography in Bwindi
Forest photography requires preparation. Lighting can be limited, especially beneath dense canopy. A camera capable of higher ISO settings can be useful. A medium telephoto or flexible zoom lens works well. Flash photography is not permitted. Protect cameras from rain.
Visitors should also take time to look away from the camera and experience the encounter directly.
Gorilla Trekking Regulations
Visitors should follow the guide at all times. Do not touch gorillas. Maintain the required viewing distance whenever possible. Keep voices low. Avoid eating or drinking in close proximity to the family. Anyone experiencing significant illness should notify the relevant authorities before trekking.
Mountain gorillas are vulnerable to diseases transmitted by humans, making these rules essential.
What to Wear
Waterproof hiking boots with strong grip are recommended. Wear long trousers and long sleeves. Gardening gloves can protect your hands from vegetation.
Gaiters or long socks are useful. Carry a waterproof jacket or poncho. Bwindi receives rainfall throughout the year, so even dry-season visitors should prepare for wet conditions.
What to Carry
Bring enough water and a packed lunch. A lightweight backpack is best. Carry insect repellent, sunscreen and required medication. Photographers should include spare batteries and memory cards. A waterproof bag or camera cover is useful. Travelers should avoid carrying excessive unnecessary equipment.
Hire a Porter
A porter can carry your daypack and provide assistance on difficult slopes. This service can transform the trekking experience, especially during a long hike. Porter employment also provides direct economic value to surrounding communities.
Visitors of all fitness levels should consider hiring one.
Returning to the Lodge
After leaving the forest, guests return to the trailhead and meet their driver-guide. The remainder of the day is usually spent relaxing at the lodge. A warm shower and comfortable meal are particularly welcome after several hours of hiking.
If trekking finishes early enough, a light optional activity may be possible, but there is no need to overfill the day.
