Safari Overview

A 2 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari combines two of the Virunga region’s most fascinating primate experiences within a compact itinerary. The journey focuses on Volcanoes National Park, where travelers can trek endangered mountain gorillas and track lively golden monkeys in the beautiful bamboo and mountain forests of northern Rwanda. This safari is particularly appealing to primate enthusiasts who have limited time but want more than a single gorilla trek. Mountain gorillas and golden monkeys share the wider Virunga ecosystem but provide completely different wildlife experiences. Gorillas are large-bodied great apes living in closely bonded family groups, while golden monkeys are smaller, agile primates that move energetically through bamboo vegetation. Careful scheduling and permit availability are essential when combining both activities into a short program.

Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

Kigali to Volcanoes National Park and Primate Experience

Your journey begins in Kigali. Meet your private driver-guide at your hotel, airport or another agreed location. An early departure is required to coordinate the first scheduled activity in the Volcanoes National Park region.

Travel north toward Musanze. The drive offers attractive views of Rwanda’s hills, farmland and rural communities. As you approach northern Rwanda, the dramatic peaks of the Virunga volcanic chain begin to dominate the landscape.

The exact ordering of gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking depends on confirmed permits and operational arrangements.

    Golden Monkey Tracking

Where golden monkey tracking is scheduled on Day 1, report to the appropriate briefing point before entering the forest with guides. Golden monkeys are among the Virunga region’s most distinctive primates.

Their golden-orange coloration contrasts beautifully with darker fur, making them especially appealing to photographers. The monkeys frequently occur around bamboo vegetation. Unlike mountain gorillas, golden monkeys can move rapidly.

They jump between branches, feed among bamboo and interact energetically within the troop. Following their movement requires alertness and patience. Your professional guides help locate the monkeys and interpret their behavior.

Photography can be challenging because the monkeys are active, but this is also part of what makes the experience exciting.

    Afternoon in Musanze

After the morning activity, enjoy lunch and transfer to your accommodation. Spend the afternoon relaxing and appreciating the mountain surroundings. Depending on available time and your energy level, an optional community or cultural activity may be possible.

However, the main priority is preparing for the following day’s gorilla trek. Your guide will remind you to organize hiking boots, long trousers, long sleeves, gardening gloves and waterproof protection. Accommodation: Musanze/Volcanoes National Park region Meal Plan: According to package

  2. Day 02

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Wake early and enjoy breakfast. Transfer to the park briefing point and register for your gorilla trek. Rangers explain the conservation regulations and appropriate visitor behavior around gorillas.

You will then be allocated to a habituated mountain gorilla family. Transfer to the relevant trailhead and begin trekking.

    Trekking through Volcanoes National Park

The walk can pass through farmland, bamboo and mountain vegetation. Trails vary depending on the gorilla family you have been allocated. Mountain gorillas move naturally, so trekking time differs every day.

Some families may be found after a relatively manageable walk, while others can require several hours of hiking. Rainfall can make the ground muddy and slippery. Hiring a porter is therefore highly recommended.

Porters can carry water, camera equipment or your backpack and provide assistance on more difficult terrain.

    Your Gorilla Encounter

When trackers locate the gorillas, you will be guided quietly closer. The first sight of a mountain gorilla in the vegetation can be extraordinary. Standard gorilla trekking normally allows visitors up to one hour with the habituated family.

Observe the silverback, females and younger gorillas as they continue feeding, resting and interacting. A silverback may appear imposing but often remains remarkably calm as family members move nearby. Juveniles may wrestle, climb bamboo or investigate their surroundings.

Infants often remain close to their mothers. Photography is permitted, but flash photography should not be used. Follow all instructions from the rangers.

    Return to Kigali

After your viewing time, hike back to the trailhead and meet your driver-guide. Enjoy lunch in the Musanze region depending on your finishing time. Begin the journey back to Kigali.

Arrive later in the day and transfer to your hotel or airport. Because the gorilla trek can take an unpredictable amount of time, travelers planning an international flight on the same evening should allow substantial contingency time.

    Gorillas Versus Golden Monkeys

The contrast between the two experiences is one of the strongest reasons to choose this itinerary. Gorilla trekking generally revolves around locating one family and then quietly observing its members. Golden monkey tracking tends to be more energetic.

The monkeys can move rapidly through bamboo, making visitors and photographers follow their progress. Together, these encounters demonstrate the extraordinary primate diversity of the Virunga ecosystem.

Good to Know

Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.

Permits

Separate authorization or permits are required for the primate activities. Gorilla permits are particularly limited. The trip should therefore be confirmed around available permits before accommodation and other non-refundable arrangements are finalized.

Our safari planners can coordinate the two experiences as efficiently as possible.

What to Wear

For both activities, practical forest clothing is important. Wear long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. Strong hiking boots with good grip are highly recommended.

Carry a waterproof jacket even when traveling in a comparatively dry period. Gardening gloves can help protect your hands from vegetation.

What to Carry

Useful items include:

  • Water
  • Small backpack
  • Camera
  • Spare batteries
  • Rain jacket
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Trekking documentation

Avoid packing excessive weight.

Photography

Gorillas are often easier to photograph because individuals may remain relatively stationary for periods of time. Golden monkeys are more challenging because of their speed. A camera capable of focusing quickly can be helpful.

Forest light can also be relatively low, so understanding your camera before the trek is worthwhile.

Who Should Choose This Safari?

The itinerary suits travelers who have limited time but are especially interested in primates. It is also an excellent choice for visitors who have already experienced conventional African wildlife elsewhere and want a specialized forest adventure.

Travelers wanting a more relaxed pace should consider a three-day version.

Best Time to Visit

Both gorilla and golden monkey activities are available throughout the year under normal operating conditions. Mountain weather can be unpredictable. Rain is possible in any season.

Comparatively drier periods are popular, while wetter months can offer lush vegetation and atmospheric scenery.
