Safari Overview

A 15 Day Best of Uganda Gorilla Safari is a comprehensive two-week-plus adventure combining mountain gorilla trekking with some of Uganda’s finest wildlife, primate and scenic destinations. Fifteen days allows travelers to explore the country at a more relaxed pace and experience multiple ecosystems rather than focusing entirely on the gorilla trek. The journey can connect northern savannah parks, the River Nile, western forests, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi and the southwestern wildlife circuit. This creates opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, lions, chimpanzees and mountain gorillas during the same trip. For first-time visitors wanting an extensive introduction to Uganda, this is one of the strongest itinerary lengths.

Good to Know

Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.

Porters can help carry equipment and provide support on steep sections.

When the family is located, standard trekking normally allows up to one hour with the habituated gorillas. Observe silverbacks, females, juveniles and infants interacting naturally. Return to the lodge after the trek.

Why Choose Fifteen Days?

Fifteen days provides enough time to explore Uganda comprehensively without making the journey excessively rushed. You can spend multiple nights in major parks rather than checking in and leaving immediately. Long transfers can be broken into manageable stages.

There is also more flexibility to incorporate primates, wildlife and scenic destinations.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Bwindi is one of Africa’s most important rainforest conservation areas. The mountain gorilla trek is regulated to limit disturbance to habituated families. Trekkers should expect uneven terrain, steep slopes and possible rainfall.

The effort required makes finally seeing the gorillas especially rewarding.

Gorilla Trekking Permit

Your permit determines the date and trekking area. Because Bwindi contains multiple sectors, accommodation must be carefully coordinated with the permit. Advance booking is highly recommended.

Wildlife Experiences

Depending on the final itinerary, travelers may see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards and numerous birds. Wildlife remains wild, so sightings vary each day.

Accommodation

The itinerary can use budget, mid-range, luxury or mixed accommodation. We recommend selecting lodges based on location as well as comfort because minimizing unnecessary transfer time improves the safari experience.

What to Pack

Bring lightweight safari clothes, binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent and camera equipment. For forest trekking, pack hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, gloves and rain protection. Carry a small daypack and sufficient water on trekking days.

Best Time to Travel

Uganda is a year-round safari destination. June through September and December through February are popular travel periods. Wetter months provide green scenery and can still offer excellent wildlife and primate experiences.
