Safari Overview

A 10 Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari offers travelers a more complete and relaxed way to experience Uganda’s mountain gorillas. Rather than treating gorilla trekking as a quick excursion, this ten-day itinerary allows you to explore the landscapes surrounding the gorilla forests, travel comfortably through the country and incorporate additional cultural, scenic or nature experiences. The journey normally centers on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda’s most famous mountain gorilla destination. Depending on permit availability and your interests, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can also be considered. Ten days makes it possible to break up long road transfers, spend several nights in the gorilla region and allow time to recover after trekking. This makes the itinerary particularly suitable for travelers who prefer slow travel, photographers, mature visitors and anyone who wants to experience southwestern Uganda beyond a single activity.

  1. Day 01

    Arrival in Entebbe

Your safari begins at Entebbe International Airport. After clearing immigration, meet your representative and transfer to your hotel. The first day is intended for rest and orientation.

Depending on arrival time, you may relax at the hotel or participate in an optional activity around Entebbe. Your guide will provide a safari briefing and confirm the following day’s departure time.

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

Entebbe to Central or Western Uganda

After breakfast, leave Entebbe and begin traveling toward western Uganda. Rather than completing an extremely long transfer directly to Bwindi, this itinerary breaks the journey into more manageable sections. Pass through Uganda’s rural countryside, agricultural districts and regional towns.

Stop at the Equator for photographs, refreshments and locally made crafts. Continue to your selected overnight destination. Arrive in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening.

Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  3. Day 03

    Continue through Southwestern Uganda

After breakfast, continue your journey toward the southwestern highlands. The landscapes become increasingly attractive as rolling countryside gives way to hills and valleys. Your driver-guide can stop at appropriate viewpoints and explain the areas you pass through.

Lunch is arranged en route. Depending on the final routing, this day can include an overnight stay near a scenic lake or highland destination. The slower pace provides a much better appreciation of Uganda than simply spending an entire day driving directly to the gorilla forest.

Enjoy breakfast before continuing toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. As you approach the park, the scenery changes dramatically. Terraced farms spread across steep hillsides, while valleys and forest-covered ridges create spectacular views.

Bwindi is an ancient rainforest recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and endangered mountain gorillas. Arrive at your lodge near the trekking sector specified on your permit. Spend the afternoon settling in and enjoying the atmosphere of the gorilla highlands.

  6. Day 06

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Today is the defining experience of your 10 Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari. Wake early, have breakfast and transfer to the appropriate Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing center. Rangers explain the rules of gorilla trekking and assign visitors to habituated gorilla families.

Enter the forest with experienced trackers and ranger guides. Bwindi’s terrain can be challenging. Trails may cross steep slopes, muddy areas and dense vegetation.

Mountain gorillas move naturally through their territory, so there is no fixed trekking duration. Some groups may locate the gorillas after a shorter hike, while others may walk for several hours. Hiring a porter is strongly recommended.

A porter can carry your backpack and assist on steep sections, making the trek considerably more comfortable. When trackers locate the family, follow your ranger’s directions carefully. Standard gorilla trekking generally allows visitors up to one hour with the habituated family.

During this remarkable encounter, you may watch a dominant silverback feeding or resting while females care for infants and juveniles climb through the vegetation. Young gorillas often play or investigate their surroundings. Because the animals are observed naturally, every trek is different.

Photography is permitted, but flash should not be used. After your allotted time, leave the gorillas and begin your return trek. Meet your driver-guide and return to your lodge.

  7. Day 07

    Relaxed Day after Gorilla Trekking

Enjoy a slow breakfast and spend the day recovering from the previous day’s trek. This additional day is one of the major advantages of a ten-day itinerary. Rather than immediately beginning a long transfer, you can appreciate the surroundings of Bwindi.

An optional community or forest activity can be arranged if you want to remain active. Photographers may use the day to explore the surrounding landscapes. Others may simply relax and reflect on the gorilla encounter.

  8. Day 08

    Scenic Southwestern Uganda Experience

After breakfast, depart Bwindi and travel toward another scenic destination within southwestern Uganda. Depending on your customized itinerary, the day may incorporate Lake Bunyonyi, another highland area or a convenient overnight stop.

Lake Bunyonyi is particularly attractive for travelers wanting a peaceful setting after gorilla trekking. Its steep hills and numerous islands create beautiful scenery. Activities can include relaxation, canoeing where appropriate, walking or simply enjoying the views from the lodge.

  9. Day 09

    Begin Return Journey toward Entebbe

After breakfast, start the return journey toward central Uganda. Breaking the route into stages avoids a very long final transfer. Travel through farming communities and regional towns.

Stop for lunch and refreshments during the journey. Arrive at your selected overnight accommodation in the afternoon or evening. Enjoy your final safari dinner.

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  10. Day 10

    Return to Entebbe – Departure

After breakfast, complete the final drive to Entebbe. Depending on your international flight schedule, there may be time for lunch or a short stop before reaching the airport. Transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight.

Why Choose Ten Days for Gorilla Trekking?

A ten-day itinerary is ideal for travelers who value experience over speed. The long duration does not mean ten days of strenuous activities. Instead, it creates space between major travel days and allows you to appreciate southwestern Uganda.

You have time to arrive in Bwindi well before trekking day, recover afterward and explore the surrounding communities and landscapes. This can make the overall trip far more rewarding.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is internationally known for mountain gorillas but is also one of Africa’s richest forest ecosystems. The park contains numerous bird species, butterflies, plants and other wildlife. Its steep terrain contributes to both its spectacular scenery and the physical challenge of gorilla trekking.

Visitors should therefore prepare for changing forest conditions and potentially demanding walking.

Gorilla Trekking Permit

A valid permit is required for every trekker. Permits are issued for a specific date and sector. Bwindi contains several trekking sectors, and accommodation must be chosen according to the permit location.

Booking early provides the best choice of dates and lodges.

What to Pack

Recommended trekking equipment includes:

  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Long trousers
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Gardening gloves
  • Comfortable hiking socks
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Small daypack
  • Drinking water
  • Camera equipment

A light sweater is useful for cooler mornings.

Fitness for Gorilla Trekking

A moderate level of fitness is beneficial. The forest can be mountainous, and some groups may need to trek for several hours. Regular walking before the safari can improve your comfort.

Hiring a porter is advisable for most visitors, not only those who consider themselves less fit.

Best Time to Visit

The safari can be undertaken throughout the year. June through September and December through February are generally popular because conditions tend to be comparatively dry. Rainfall is more common from March to May and October to November.

However, rain can occur at any time in Bwindi.
