10 Day Uganda Big Five & Gorilla Safari

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and meet your safari representative. Transfer to your selected hotel. The remainder of the day is reserved for relaxation after your flight.

Your guide or safari representative will explain the upcoming itinerary and the different wildlife environments you will visit.

After breakfast, depart Entebbe and travel toward the rhino conservation area included in your itinerary. Rhino conservation is an important part of Uganda’s wider wildlife recovery story. On arrival, attend a briefing before accompanying trained guides to search for rhinos.

Tracking rhinos on foot provides a very different experience from watching wildlife inside a vehicle. Guides carefully monitor the animals and determine safe viewing locations. Always follow their instructions and maintain the required distance.

After the tracking activity, enjoy lunch and continue toward your overnight destination. This first major wildlife day introduces one member of the traditional Big Five while providing insight into conservation efforts.

After breakfast, continue toward one of Uganda’s principal savannah wildlife areas. The drive reveals changing vegetation and scenery as you approach the national park. Enter the protected area and begin your first major game drive.

Search for African elephants, Cape buffaloes, antelopes and other mammals. Lions may occur within suitable habitats, while leopards are naturally secretive and more difficult to locate. Your guide will also identify smaller species, birds and signs of animal activity.

Continue to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Wake early and begin a game drive during the cooler morning hours. Wildlife is often especially active around sunrise. Your driver-guide will explore productive habitats and use knowledge of recent sightings to determine where to concentrate the search.

Look for elephants feeding in woodland, buffaloes moving in herds and antelopes grazing on open plains. Predator sightings can be particularly exciting. Lions may rest near prey concentrations, while leopards can occasionally be found around woodland or rocky habitats.

After the morning drive, return to the lodge for breakfast or lunch. In the afternoon, continue wildlife viewing or participate in a boat safari if included in your itinerary. Water-based activities can provide opportunities to see hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and extensive birdlife.

Return to the lodge for dinner.

After breakfast, enjoy another game drive. A second or third wildlife excursion is valuable because no safari sighting is guaranteed. Conditions and animal movements change constantly, so every drive can produce different observations.

Continue searching for members of the Big Five and other wildlife before leaving the park. After lunch, begin your transfer south through western Uganda. The journey introduces you to new landscapes as the safari gradually moves toward the gorilla highlands.

Arrive at your overnight lodge in the afternoon or evening.

After breakfast, continue toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The scenery changes dramatically as open countryside gives way to increasingly mountainous terrain. Terraced farms spread across hillsides and dense patches of forest appear as you approach Bwindi.

Arrive at your lodge close to the trekking sector assigned on your gorilla permit. Bwindi contains several gorilla trekking sectors, making the location of accommodation an important logistical consideration. Spend the evening preparing for the next day.

Ensure your hiking boots, long trousers, rain jacket, gloves and daypack are ready.

Today provides the signature experience of your 10 Day Uganda Big Five & Gorilla Safari. Wake early and transfer to the relevant Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing center after breakfast. Rangers explain trekking procedures, forest safety and the regulations governing encounters with mountain gorillas.

Visitors are assigned to habituated gorilla families and enter the forest with professional trackers. Bwindi’s trails can be steep, muddy and physically demanding. The gorillas move naturally through the rainforest, so there is no fixed amount of time required to find them.

Hiring a porter is highly recommended.

After a demanding gorilla trek, enjoy a slower day. An optional community experience can introduce you to life around Bwindi, including farming, crafts and tourism-related livelihoods. Travelers interested in nature can choose a forest or birding walk.

Alternatively, remain at your lodge and enjoy the mountain atmosphere. The additional day allows you to recover after trekking rather than beginning a long transfer immediately.

After breakfast, check out and travel toward central Uganda. Enjoy the scenic transition from southwestern highlands to lower countryside. Stop for lunch and refreshments during the journey.

Breaking the return route with an overnight stay reduces fatigue and provides a comfortable conclusion to the safari. Arrive at your selected lodge or hotel in the afternoon.

After breakfast, complete the final journey to Entebbe. Depending on timing, stop at the Equator for photographs and souvenir shopping. Continue to Entebbe International Airport for your international flight.

Can You See the Big Five in Uganda?

Uganda provides opportunities to encounter all five animals traditionally associated with the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. However, they are not concentrated in a single protected area.

Rhinos are encountered through dedicated conservation arrangements, while lions, leopards, elephants and buffaloes live within Uganda’s major national parks. Seeing every species cannot be guaranteed because all wildlife encounters depend on natural animal movements.

The safari should therefore be approached as a search for wildlife rather than a guaranteed checklist.

Why Add Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking transforms a conventional wildlife safari into something completely different. Game drives usually involve observing animals from inside a vehicle. In Bwindi, you hike through dense rainforest on foot and spend time with one habituated gorilla family.
