Safari Overview

The 5 Day Gorillas & Golden Monkeys Uganda safari is a primate-focused journey into the spectacular mountains and forests of southwestern Uganda. Designed for travelers fascinated by rare primates, the itinerary combines mountain gorilla trekking with an energetic golden monkey tracking experience. One of the best destinations for this combination is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, part of the greater Virunga ecosystem. The park protects dramatic volcanic landscapes, montane forest and bamboo zones that provide habitat for both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Depending on gorilla permit availability, the itinerary can also incorporate Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the gorilla trekking component while retaining golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga. Five days provides enough time to travel from Entebbe or Kampala, experience both primate activities and appreciate southwestern Uganda's extraordinary scenery.

Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Arrival in Entebbe

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, complete immigration and baggage formalities before meeting your safari representative. Transfer to your selected hotel in Entebbe.

The remainder of the day is available for relaxation. Travelers arriving earlier can arrange optional activities in Entebbe depending on time and personal interests. Your safari guide will provide an overview of the journey and advise you about clothing and equipment for the trekking activities.

    Main Destination: Entebbe

    • Meals Lunch, Dinner
  2. Day 02

    Entebbe to Southwestern Uganda

After breakfast, leave Entebbe and begin the scenic journey toward southwestern Uganda. Travel through towns, agricultural landscapes and rolling countryside before reaching increasingly mountainous terrain. A stop can normally be made around the Equator for photographs and refreshments.

Continue through southwestern Uganda, where the landscape becomes particularly dramatic. Cultivated hillsides, valleys and distant mountain ranges create some of the country's most impressive road scenery.

Depending on the final trekking arrangements, proceed toward the Mgahinga/Kisoro region or the appropriate Bwindi sector. Arrive at your lodge in the evening. Enjoy dinner and prepare for your first primate adventure.

  3. Day 03

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Wake early and have breakfast before transferring to the designated gorilla trekking briefing point. You will register and attend a briefing led by park personnel. The briefing covers trekking procedures, safety and the rules governing encounters with mountain gorillas.

After being assigned to a gorilla trekking group, enter the forest with ranger guides and trackers.

The terrain varies considerably. In Mgahinga, trekking may take you through montane forest and vegetation associated with the Virunga volcanic landscape. In Bwindi, the environment consists of ancient rainforest spread across steep ridges and valleys.

The gorillas move naturally within their habitat, so trekking time cannot be predicted precisely. Your guides monitor signs such as footprints, vegetation and previous gorilla locations while communicating with trackers. Eventually, you may catch your first glimpse of dark fur through the vegetation.

Once the habituated gorilla family is located, standard trekking participants normally receive up to one hour in their presence. Watch quietly as the gorillas feed, groom, rest and interact.

A mature silverback is particularly impressive at close range, but younger gorillas often provide some of the encounter's most entertaining moments as they play and explore. Always follow your ranger's instructions regarding distance, photography and movement.

After the encounter, trek back to the starting point and meet your driver. Return to your lodge for relaxation.

  4. Day 04

    Golden Monkey Tracking

Today offers a completely different primate experience. After breakfast, transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for golden monkey tracking. Golden monkeys are visually striking primates characterized by patches of golden-orange fur contrasting with darker coloration.

They are associated with the Albertine Rift and are particularly well adapted to the bamboo forests of the Virunga region. After a briefing, enter the forest with your guides.

Golden monkey tracking tends to be more energetic than gorilla trekking. These small primates can move rapidly through bamboo and forest vegetation, often jumping between branches or feeding in groups. Their speed and activity make photography challenging but extremely rewarding.

Your guides will help locate the troop and position visitors where the monkeys can be observed without disturbing their natural behavior. You may see individuals feeding on bamboo shoots, fruits and other vegetation while younger monkeys chase each other through the branches.

The experience highlights the remarkable primate diversity of southwestern Uganda. After completing the activity, return to your lodge. Depending on timing and your energy level, the afternoon can be spent relaxing or participating in an optional community activity.

  5. Day 05

    Return to Entebbe

After breakfast, begin your return journey through southwestern Uganda. Enjoy the final views of the mountainous landscape before continuing through Uganda's countryside. Stop for lunch and refreshments during the drive.

If time allows, your guide can make another convenient stop around the Equator or at suitable roadside craft centers. Continue to Entebbe, where you will be transferred to your hotel or Entebbe International Airport.

Your 5 Day Gorillas & Golden Monkeys Uganda adventure ends after experiencing two fascinating primate species within one compact itinerary.

Gorilla Trekking Versus Golden Monkey Tracking

Although both activities involve walking through forest environments, the experiences are quite different.

Mountain gorillas are large-bodied primates that often remain relatively close together while feeding and resting. Their size, family relationships and similarities to humans make the encounter particularly powerful. Golden monkeys are smaller, quicker and considerably more energetic.

Watching an entire troop moving through bamboo creates a lively forest experience and provides an excellent complement to the slower, more intimate atmosphere of a gorilla encounter. Doing both allows visitors to appreciate the remarkable biodiversity of Uganda's southwestern forests.

    Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga is Uganda's smallest national park but one of its most spectacular. It forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area and is dominated by the slopes of three volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo. Its habitats range from bamboo forest to montane vegetation.

The combination of volcanic scenery, mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and specialized Albertine Rift wildlife makes Mgahinga particularly appealing to nature enthusiasts.

Permits and Advance Booking

Both gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking are regulated activities. Gorilla permits are especially important because visitor numbers are strictly controlled. We recommend checking permit availability before purchasing non-refundable arrangements for your intended dates.

Once permits are secured, appropriate accommodation and transfers can be confirmed around the designated trekking locations.

What to Pack

Prepare for changing mountain weather. Essential items include sturdy hiking shoes, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, rain protection, gardening gloves and insect repellent. Carry a small daypack with drinking water, packed lunch where appropriate and camera equipment.

A light fleece or sweater is useful because mornings and evenings at higher elevations can feel cool. Porters can usually be hired for gorilla trekking and are highly recommended.

Who Should Choose This Safari?

This itinerary particularly suits travelers interested in primates, conservation, photography and forest environments. It is also an excellent alternative for visitors who have already experienced conventional savannah game drives elsewhere in Africa and want something different.

The safari can be extended to include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, Kibale National Park or additional days in Bwindi.
