Day 01
Kigali – Volcanoes National Park
Your safari begins with pickup from Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali.
If your schedule allows, you can include a short Kigali city experience before departing for northwestern Rwanda. Travelers interested in Rwanda's history may choose to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, while other stops can focus on local markets, art, culture or viewpoints around the capital.
Afterward, travel north toward Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. The drive is one of the most scenic road journeys in Rwanda. The route climbs through densely cultivated hills and rural communities, with the Virunga volcanoes gradually appearing on the horizon.
Arrive at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park and check in. Your guide will brief you about the next morning's gorilla trekking procedures, including suitable clothing, departure time and what to carry. Enjoy dinner and an early night before your first trek.

Day 02
First Gorilla Trekking Experience
After an early breakfast, drive to the designated briefing point for your first mountain gorilla trek.
Park officials explain trekking regulations and assign visitors to habituated gorilla families. Group allocation can take factors such as fitness into consideration, although the location of gorillas changes constantly and the exact difficulty of any trek cannot be guaranteed.
You will then enter the forest with trained trackers, guides and ranger personnel.
Searching for Mountain Gorillas
Mountain gorillas move through their natural habitat according to food availability and other factors. Trackers use knowledge of their previous location, feeding signs, footprints and other clues to locate the assigned family.
The trek may involve climbing steep slopes, crossing muddy ground and moving through thick vegetation. Hiring a porter is highly recommended. Porters can carry your backpack, water and camera equipment while also helping on difficult sections of the trail.
Eventually, your trackers will signal that the gorillas are close. Your first sight of a mountain gorilla emerging from dense vegetation can be extraordinary. After reaching the family, visitors normally receive a regulated observation period.

Day 03
Second Gorilla Trekking Experience
Today you return to Volcanoes National Park for your second mountain gorilla encounter. Why trek twice? Because no two gorilla trekking experiences are the same.
Weather may be different. The forest route will often be different. The gorillas may be feeding, resting, moving or interacting in completely different ways. Where possible, arrangements can be requested for you to visit a different habituated gorilla family, subject to park allocation procedures.
A Second Chance for Photography
A second trek is particularly valuable for photographers. During the first encounter, the excitement of finally seeing mountain gorillas can make the regulated viewing period seem remarkably short. A second trek allows you to approach the experience with greater familiarity.
You may concentrate more closely on individual behavior, facial expressions, family relationships and environmental photographs. Forest photography can be challenging because of vegetation and changing light. Flash photography is not permitted around gorillas, so appropriate camera settings and equipment are important.

Volcanoes National Park – Kigali
