Safari Overview

A 4 Day Rwanda Double Gorilla Trek is designed for travelers who want more than a single encounter with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. The safari includes two separate gorilla trekking experiences in Volcanoes National Park, giving you two opportunities to enter the Virunga rainforest, follow experienced trackers and spend time observing habituated mountain gorilla families. Gorilla encounters are never identical. On your first trek, you may find a family resting in thick vegetation while juveniles play nearby. Your second trek may involve a completely different family, terrain and pattern of behavior. This makes double gorilla trekking especially rewarding for wildlife photographers, primate enthusiasts and travelers for whom seeing mountain gorillas is the primary reason for visiting Rwanda. The four-day itinerary also provides comfortable travel time between Kigali and Volcanoes National Park, three nights of accommodation and private transportation throughout the safari.

4 Day Rwanda Double Gorilla Trek Overview

Volcanoes National Park protects Rwanda's section of the Virunga Mountains in the northwestern part of the country. Its mountainous rainforest and bamboo zones provide habitat for endangered mountain gorillas as well as golden monkeys and numerous bird species. The 4 day rwanda double gorilla trek includes two different days dedicated to gorilla trekking. Gorilla permits must therefore be secured for both trekking dates. The itinerary normally follows this structure: Accommodation can be arranged at budget, mid-range, luxury or high-end level depending on your preferences.

Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Kigali – Volcanoes National Park

Your safari begins with pickup from Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali.

If your schedule allows, you can include a short Kigali city experience before departing for northwestern Rwanda. Travelers interested in Rwanda's history may choose to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, while other stops can focus on local markets, art, culture or viewpoints around the capital.

Afterward, travel north toward Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. The drive is one of the most scenic road journeys in Rwanda. The route climbs through densely cultivated hills and rural communities, with the Virunga volcanoes gradually appearing on the horizon.

Arrive at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park and check in. Your guide will brief you about the next morning's gorilla trekking procedures, including suitable clothing, departure time and what to carry. Enjoy dinner and an early night before your first trek.

  2. Day 02

    First Gorilla Trekking Experience

After an early breakfast, drive to the designated briefing point for your first mountain gorilla trek.

Park officials explain trekking regulations and assign visitors to habituated gorilla families. Group allocation can take factors such as fitness into consideration, although the location of gorillas changes constantly and the exact difficulty of any trek cannot be guaranteed.

You will then enter the forest with trained trackers, guides and ranger personnel.

    Searching for Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas move through their natural habitat according to food availability and other factors. Trackers use knowledge of their previous location, feeding signs, footprints and other clues to locate the assigned family.

The trek may involve climbing steep slopes, crossing muddy ground and moving through thick vegetation. Hiring a porter is highly recommended. Porters can carry your backpack, water and camera equipment while also helping on difficult sections of the trail.

Eventually, your trackers will signal that the gorillas are close. Your first sight of a mountain gorilla emerging from dense vegetation can be extraordinary. After reaching the family, visitors normally receive a regulated observation period.

You may see the dominant silverback, adult females, playful juveniles and, depending on the family, very young infants. After your encounter, trek back out of the forest and return to your lodge. The remainder of the afternoon can be used for relaxation and preparation for your second gorilla trek.

  3. Day 03

    Second Gorilla Trekking Experience

Today you return to Volcanoes National Park for your second mountain gorilla encounter. Why trek twice? Because no two gorilla trekking experiences are the same.

Weather may be different. The forest route will often be different. The gorillas may be feeding, resting, moving or interacting in completely different ways. Where possible, arrangements can be requested for you to visit a different habituated gorilla family, subject to park allocation procedures.

    A Second Chance for Photography

A second trek is particularly valuable for photographers. During the first encounter, the excitement of finally seeing mountain gorillas can make the regulated viewing period seem remarkably short. A second trek allows you to approach the experience with greater familiarity.

You may concentrate more closely on individual behavior, facial expressions, family relationships and environmental photographs. Forest photography can be challenging because of vegetation and changing light. Flash photography is not permitted around gorillas, so appropriate camera settings and equipment are important.

After completing the second trek, return to your lodge. Celebrate two successful mountain gorilla encounters and enjoy your final evening near the Virunga Mountains.

  4. Day 04

    Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

After breakfast, check out and begin your drive back to Kigali. Depending on your international flight schedule, you may travel directly to Kigali International Airport or spend additional time exploring the city. Optional stops can be incorporated where timing permits.

This concludes your 4 Day Rwanda Double Gorilla Trek.

    Why Trek Gorillas Twice?

For many visitors, gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Trekking twice makes that experience significantly more comprehensive. A second permit gives you another opportunity if weather conditions are difficult on the first day. It also allows you to observe a broader range of gorilla behavior.

Different gorilla families have different compositions. One may contain several energetic juveniles, while another could provide particularly impressive silverback encounters. For serious wildlife enthusiasts, two trekking days can therefore be considerably more rewarding than one.

Good to Know

Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.

Gorilla Permits for Two Treks

The 4 day rwanda double gorilla trek requires two Rwanda gorilla permits per traveler. Permits are date-specific and subject to availability. Because the number of visitors permitted to trek each day is controlled, early reservations are strongly recommended. Peak travel months can sell out well in advance.

When requesting this safari, provide your preferred travel dates so permit availability can be checked before accommodation and other services are finalized.

Best Time for Double Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking is available throughout the year. Many travelers prefer Rwanda's relatively drier periods because forest trails can be easier to navigate. However, Volcanoes National Park is a high-altitude rainforest environment and rainfall can occur during any month.

The wetter seasons can result in muddier conditions, but they also produce lush vegetation and atmospheric forest scenery. Your choice should therefore consider overall East African travel plans as well as trekking conditions.

What to Pack for Two Gorilla Treks

Because you will enter the forest on consecutive days, bring enough appropriate trekking clothing. Useful items include:

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long trekking trousers
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Gardening or trekking gloves
  • Gaiters
  • Small waterproof daypack
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent
  • Sun protection
  • Camera equipment
  • Spare batteries and memory cards

Your lodge may provide laundry services, but you should not depend on same-day laundry for essential trekking equipment.

Accommodation Near Volcanoes National Park

A wide range of accommodation is available around Musanze and the park entrance. Budget options provide simple, practical accommodation for travelers prioritizing the trekking experience. Mid-range lodges offer additional comfort and attractive surroundings.

Luxury and high-end properties can include spacious rooms, fireplaces, premium dining, personalized service and impressive views of the Virunga volcanoes. We can match accommodation to your preferred budget while keeping transfer times to trekking activities practical.

Extend Your Rwanda Gorilla Safari

The four-day itinerary can easily become part of a longer Rwanda or East African safari. In Rwanda, you can continue to Akagera National Park for traditional savannah wildlife viewing or Nyungwe National Park for chimpanzee trekking and rainforest activities.

Travelers can also cross into Uganda for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale National Park or other destinations. Combining Rwanda's mountain gorillas with Uganda's wildlife and chimpanzees creates a particularly diverse primate and safari experience.
