Its location makes it particularly convenient for itineraries connecting Uganda and Rwanda or for travelers visiting the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The lake is surrounded by a landscape of terraced hills cultivated by local communities. Small settlements, farms and lodges are scattered around the shoreline and nearby islands.
Travelers arriving from Kampala or Entebbe usually reach the area as part of a longer southwestern Uganda journey.
Others may travel from Kigali in Rwanda, depending on their itinerary and border arrangements.
