Safari Overview

An 8 Day Rwanda Gorilla Chimp & Akagera Safari is one of the most comprehensive ways to experience Rwanda in a single journey. The itinerary combines mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park and traditional wildlife viewing in Akagera National Park. These three destinations reveal dramatically different sides of Rwanda. Volcanoes National Park offers misty mountain forest and encounters with endangered mountain gorillas. Nyungwe protects ancient rainforest and some of Rwanda's most important chimpanzee populations. Akagera introduces open savannah, woodland, lakes and wetlands where travelers can search for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, predators and other wildlife. Eight days provide enough time to connect these parks at a comfortable pace while also experiencing Kigali and Rwanda's remarkable countryside.

The journey takes you through rolling hills, agricultural landscapes and lively towns. The Virunga volcanoes become increasingly visible as you approach Musanze. Check into your lodge and prepare for gorilla trekking.

  3. Day 03

    Mountain Gorilla Trekking

After an early breakfast, drive to the gorilla trekking briefing area. Park staff explain rules and divide visitors into groups before assigning habituated mountain gorilla families. Enter the forest accompanied by trackers, guides and ranger personnel.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The duration of your trek depends on the gorillas' location. Some families may be relatively close to the starting point, while others require a longer hike through bamboo forest and mountainous terrain. Conditions can be wet and muddy even during relatively dry travel periods.

Hiring a porter is highly recommended. When the gorillas are located, approach according to your guide's instructions. You may watch the dominant silverback resting near his family, adults feeding and younger gorillas playing.

The regulated encounter provides a rare opportunity to observe one of the world's most endangered great apes in its natural habitat. Afterward, trek back and return to your lodge. Spend the afternoon at leisure.

Appropriate rest and refreshment stops can be arranged. Eventually, arrive in the Nyungwe region and check into your lodge. Nyungwe is one of Africa's largest remaining montane forest ecosystems and is renowned for its primate diversity.

Enjoy dinner and prepare for chimpanzee trekking.

  5. Day 05

    Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest

Wake early and transfer to the appropriate chimpanzee trekking starting point. After a briefing, enter the forest with experienced trackers and guides.

    Tracking Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are considerably more mobile than mountain gorillas. They may move rapidly along the forest floor, climb high into trees or communicate through powerful vocalizations. Trackers follow their calls and signs of recent movement.

Once chimpanzees are located, you can observe their social behavior according to park regulations. You may see individuals grooming, feeding, climbing or interacting within the community. Their intelligence and energetic behavior make the experience one of Rwanda's great wildlife highlights.

Nyungwe is also home to numerous monkey species, so other primates may be encountered during the activity. After trekking, return to your lodge. Depending on time and energy, an optional canopy walk or forest experience may be incorporated.

  6. Day 06

    Nyungwe to Akagera Region

After breakfast, begin the journey toward Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda. The transfer crosses much of the country and illustrates just how diverse Rwanda's landscapes are. Your guide will schedule appropriate stops along the route.

As you approach eastern Rwanda, the environment changes from forested mountains to warmer savannah landscapes. Arrive near Akagera, check into your accommodation and relax after the journey. Depending on timing, a short introductory wildlife experience may be possible.

    Main Destination: Nyungwe National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  7. Day 07

    Full-Day Akagera National Park Safari

Spend a full day exploring Akagera National Park. An early departure is recommended to maximize wildlife viewing. Akagera's habitats include savannah, woodland, lakes, valleys and extensive wetland systems.

    Main Destination: Akagera National Park

    • Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  8. Day 08

Akagera Game Drive – Return to Kigali

Rise early for a final game drive. Morning temperatures are generally cooler and can provide another excellent opportunity to locate wildlife. Your guide will focus on areas or species not covered sufficiently the previous day.

Afterward, exit Akagera and travel back to Kigali. Depending on your onward schedule, transfer to your hotel or Kigali International Airport. This concludes your 8 Day Rwanda Gorilla Chimp & Akagera Safari.

Why Combine Rwanda's Three Major Parks?

This itinerary works exceptionally well because each destination offers something completely different. Volcanoes National Park is primarily a mountain and primate destination. Nyungwe provides dense rainforest, chimpanzees and multiple monkey species.

Akagera delivers classic African savannah wildlife. Rather than visiting Rwanda solely for gorillas, you experience the country's broader conservation story and ecological diversity.

    Gorilla and Chimpanzee Permits

Separate permits are required for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. Gorilla permits have particularly limited daily availability and should be booked early. Chimpanzee permits should also be reserved before travel.

Permit prices and regulations can change, so current information must be confirmed when booking. Once both trekking dates are fixed, the rest of the itinerary can be arranged accordingly.
