Day 01
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
Your safari starts in Kigali. Meet your private safari guide at Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location. Depending on arrival time, you may include a short Kigali city tour before departing for Volcanoes National Park.
The drive north passes through Rwanda's characteristic rolling hills and cultivated countryside. Approaching Musanze, the dramatic Virunga volcanoes rise above the surrounding landscape. Check into your selected accommodation near Volcanoes National Park.
Your guide will brief you about gorilla trekking and help you prepare your clothing and equipment for the following morning. Enjoy dinner and rest.

Day 02
Gorilla Trekking – Transfer Toward Akagera
After an early breakfast, travel to the designated briefing point for your gorilla trek. Park staff explain trekking regulations before assigning visitors to habituated gorilla families. You then enter Volcanoes National Park with trackers and guides.
Gorilla Trekking Experience
The trek can take anything from a relatively short period to several hours depending on where the assigned gorilla family is located. Terrain can be steep, wet and muddy. A porter is highly recommended, both for carrying equipment and helping on difficult sections.
When the gorillas are found, follow your guide's instructions as you approach. Mountain gorillas are remarkably expressive animals. You may watch adults feeding, juveniles playing and the silverback monitoring activity around the family.
The permitted observation period provides exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. Afterward, return through the forest and meet your safari driver.
Depending on timing and the precise itinerary design, begin traveling toward eastern Rwanda or overnight at a strategically selected location to make the following day's Akagera experience efficient.

Day 03
Akagera National Park Wildlife Safari
Today the character of your Rwanda safari changes completely. Enter Akagera National Park for game viewing through a landscape that feels very different from the Virunga rainforest. Akagera includes rolling savannah, acacia woodland, lakes, papyrus wetlands and open plains.
Wildlife in Akagera
Wildlife sightings vary naturally, but species you may encounter include:
- African elephants
- Cape buffaloes
- Giraffes
- Zebras
- Impalas
- Topis
- Waterbucks
- Hippos
- Crocodiles
- Warthogs
- Baboons
- Monkeys
Large predators including lions and leopards are also present, although sightings can never be guaranteed. Rhinos are part of Akagera's restored large-mammal community, making the park important for Rwanda's broader wildlife conservation story.
Your guide will search different habitats according to recent wildlife movements and conditions. Birdlife is another major attraction. Akagera's mixture of wetland and savannah habitats supports an impressive variety of species.
Depending on the itinerary and available time, a boat experience may also be incorporated or requested as an addition. Spend the night at or near Akagera National Park.

Day 04
Akagera Game Drive – Kigali
Rise early for another opportunity to explore Akagera. Morning is often an excellent time for wildlife activity because temperatures are cooler. Drive through selected sectors of the park while searching for species you may not have seen the previous day.
The changing landscapes are a highlight in themselves. After completing your game viewing, exit Akagera and travel back to Kigali. Your guide can transfer you to your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport depending on your onward arrangements.
This concludes your 4 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Akagera Safari.
Why Combine Volcanoes and Akagera?
Many travelers associate Rwanda almost exclusively with mountain gorillas. Gorillas are certainly one of the country's greatest attractions, but Akagera reveals another side of Rwanda. The contrast between the two parks is extraordinary.
Volcanoes National Park offers steep mountains, bamboo forest, mist and primates. Akagera offers open landscapes, lakes, wetlands and classic African wildlife. Combining them allows travelers to experience two completely different ecosystems during one short holiday.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
A Rwanda gorilla trekking permit is required for the Volcanoes National Park activity. Permits are limited and should be secured before finalizing the rest of your safari. Because rates and policies may change, always confirm the current permit price when booking.
Once permit availability has been established, we can organize accommodation and Akagera activities around the confirmed trekking date.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Best Time for the Safari
The 4 day rwanda gorilla & akagera safari can be undertaken throughout the year. Relatively dry months can provide easier gorilla trekking conditions and are often excellent for game viewing in Akagera.
During wetter periods, Volcanoes National Park trails may become more slippery, while Akagera's vegetation can become greener. Wildlife remains present throughout the year.
Rather than choosing dates solely around a theoretical "perfect" season, consider your wider East African itinerary, permit availability and preferred travel conditions.
What to Pack
Because this safari combines rainforest trekking and savannah game viewing, your packing list should cover both environments. Important items include:
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Rain jacket
- Long trekking trousers
- Long-sleeved shirt
- Gloves for gorilla trekking
- Gaiters
- Comfortable safari clothing
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Sun protection
- Insect repellent
- Binoculars
- Camera
- Spare batteries
- Refillable water bottle
Layers are useful because temperatures around Volcanoes National Park can feel considerably cooler than those in Akagera.
Accommodation Choices
This safari can be organized at several accommodation levels. Around Volcanoes National Park, choices range from simple guesthouses and comfortable mid-range lodges to internationally recognized luxury properties. Akagera similarly offers accommodation suited to different budgets and safari styles.
We select properties based on your budget, desired comfort and efficient access to planned activities.
Private Rwanda Safari Experience
Private transportation is particularly valuable on this itinerary because you are moving between opposite sides of Rwanda. A private vehicle allows the schedule to be coordinated around your gorilla trek and game drives rather than fixed group departures.
Your driver-guide also remains an important source of information throughout the journey, explaining Rwanda's landscapes, communities, wildlife and history.
Extend the Safari
Four days provide an excellent introduction, but the itinerary can easily be expanded. Additional options include chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park, relaxation at Lake Kivu or extra days in Akagera. Travelers interested primarily in primates can add golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park.
The safari can also continue into Uganda for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale National Park and other destinations.
Who Is This Safari Best For?
The itinerary is particularly suitable for first-time Rwanda visitors who want maximum diversity in a limited period. It works well for couples, solo travelers, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and travelers combining Rwanda with another East African destination.
Rather than choosing between gorillas and conventional game viewing, you experience both.
