Safari Overview

A 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Mount Bisoke Safari combines two of Rwanda's most rewarding mountain adventures: trekking endangered mountain gorillas and hiking Mount Bisoke in the spectacular Virunga Mountains. Designed for travelers with limited time who still want an active and memorable Rwanda safari, this itinerary takes you from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park for two distinctly different experiences in one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes. The highlight is an unforgettable encounter with a habituated mountain gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park. The following day brings a challenging hike to the summit of Mount Bisoke, an extinct volcano rising to approximately 3,711 metres above sea level and crowned by a beautiful crater lake. With private road transfers, comfortable accommodation near Volcanoes National Park and expert logistical planning, this short Rwanda safari makes it possible to experience two major Virunga attractions in only three days.

3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Mount Bisoke Safari Overview

Volcanoes National Park lies in northwestern Rwanda near the town of Musanze. It protects Rwanda's section of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanoes extending across Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is internationally known for its mountain gorillas, but its appeal extends beyond gorilla trekking. Dense montane forest, bamboo zones, high-altitude vegetation, volcanic peaks and spectacular views make this one of Rwanda's finest destinations for adventurous travelers. Our 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Mount Bisoke Safari combines: It is particularly suitable for active travelers, photographers, couples, solo travelers and visitors who want more than a conventional gorilla trekking trip.

Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 01

Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your safari begins in Kigali, where your private safari guide meets you at your hotel or another agreed pickup point.

Depending on your arrival schedule, there may be time for a short Kigali city experience before traveling north toward Volcanoes National Park. Kigali is Rwanda's capital and provides an interesting introduction to the country's modern history, culture and development.

The drive toward Musanze reveals why Rwanda is known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills." The road passes through rolling agricultural landscapes, rural communities and increasingly mountainous scenery. As you approach Musanze, the enormous Virunga volcanoes begin to dominate the horizon.

You will continue to your selected lodge near Volcanoes National Park and settle in for the evening. Your guide will discuss the following morning's gorilla trekking arrangements, including departure time, clothing and equipment recommendations.

  2. Day 02

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today brings the signature experience of your 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Mount Bisoke Safari.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for registration and the pre-trek briefing. Park personnel explain gorilla trekking procedures, appropriate behavior in the forest and the conservation rules designed to protect the mountain gorillas.

Visitors are then assigned to habituated gorilla families and accompanied into the forest by experienced trackers and guides.

    Trekking Through the Virunga Forest

The trek can vary considerably in duration and difficulty because mountain gorillas move freely through their habitat. Some groups may be reached relatively quickly, while others require several hours of hiking across steep, muddy or densely vegetated terrain.

The journey itself is part of the adventure. Volcanoes National Park contains bamboo forest, montane vegetation and beautiful views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. Porters can normally be hired to help carry bags and provide assistance on challenging sections of the trail.

Once trackers locate your assigned gorilla family, the atmosphere changes completely.

You may observe adults feeding among the vegetation, juveniles climbing and playing, mothers caring for infants and the powerful silverback watching over his family. Visitors normally spend a regulated period with the gorillas before beginning the walk back out of the forest.

It is one of Africa's most intimate wildlife experiences.

    Gorilla Trekking Permits

A valid Rwanda gorilla trekking permit is required for every participant. Permit availability is limited, so advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly during popular travel periods. Because permit prices and regulations can change, travelers should confirm current rates and conditions when booking.

After trekking, return to your lodge for lunch, relaxation and preparation for the next day's Mount Bisoke adventure. 3. Day 03

Mount Bisoke Hike – Return to Kigali

After an early breakfast, transfer back toward the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your Mount Bisoke hiking briefing.

Mount Bisoke, sometimes called Visoke, forms part of the Virunga volcanic chain and rises to approximately 3,711 metres above sea level. The summit sits close to the Rwanda–DR Congo border and contains a striking crater lake. You will hike with an authorized guide and ranger team.

    Hiking Mount Bisoke

The Mount Bisoke hike is physically demanding and should not be underestimated. Rain, mud, altitude and steep sections can make the ascent more challenging than the distance alone suggests. The trail climbs through several vegetation zones, providing changing scenery as elevation increases.

Weather conditions can change quickly in the Virunga Mountains. Waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, gloves and sufficient drinking water are strongly recommended. Porters are also highly useful. In addition to carrying equipment, they can provide practical support on slippery or steep sections.

Reaching the summit is immensely rewarding. When conditions are clear, hikers enjoy dramatic views across the Virunga landscape. The crater lake provides a memorable focal point before the descent begins. After completing the hike, meet your safari driver and begin the journey back to Kigali.

Arrival time depends on hiking conditions and your pace. Travelers flying out of Rwanda on the same day should allow generous time between the expected completion of the hike and their international flight.

Good to Know

Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.

Best Time for This Rwanda Gorilla and Bisoke Safari

The 3 day rwanda gorilla & mount bisoke safari can be arranged throughout the year.

Rwanda's relatively drier periods are often preferred for hiking because forest and mountain trails may be less muddy. However, Volcanoes National Park remains a rainforest and mountain environment, so rain is possible at virtually any time.

Wetter conditions can make both gorilla trekking and the Mount Bisoke hike more demanding. Travelers should therefore prepare for changing weather regardless of travel month.

What to Pack

Good preparation makes both trekking days considerably more comfortable. Recommended items include:

  • Strong waterproof hiking boots
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho
  • Long hiking trousers
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Gardening or trekking gloves
  • Small daypack
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Sun protection
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera and spare batteries
  • Walking stick where required
  • Warm layer for higher elevations

Gaiters can be particularly useful on muddy trails.

How Difficult Is Mount Bisoke?

Mount Bisoke requires a reasonable level of fitness. Unlike gorilla trekking, where difficulty varies according to the gorillas' location, the Bisoke hike involves sustained uphill walking toward a high-altitude summit. Muddy terrain and rain can substantially increase the effort required.

Travelers who exercise regularly and are comfortable with several hours of mountain walking generally have an advantage. You do not need to be a technical climber. Mount Bisoke is a hiking experience rather than a technical mountaineering expedition, but adequate preparation is important.

Who Should Choose This Safari?

This itinerary works especially well for travelers who want a short but adventurous Rwanda itinerary. Rather than completing a gorilla trek and immediately returning to Kigali, you spend an additional day exploring the volcanic environment that makes Volcanoes National Park so distinctive. It is ideal for:

Active travelers who enjoy hiking and wildlife. Couples looking for an adventurous addition to a Rwanda holiday. Photographers interested in primates, landscapes and mountain scenery.

Solo travelers wanting a privately organized Rwanda trekking experience. East Africa safari travelers adding Rwanda to a longer Uganda, Kenya or Tanzania itinerary.

Accommodation Options

Accommodation around Volcanoes National Park ranges from practical guesthouses to sophisticated luxury lodges.

Budget-conscious travelers can choose comfortable properties around Musanze or Kinigi, while mid-range options provide additional comfort, attractive surroundings and convenient access to trekking departure points.

Luxury travelers can select premium lodges with exceptional service, fine dining, spacious accommodation and impressive views of the Virunga Mountains. We recommend selecting accommodation according to your budget, preferred level of comfort and the location of your scheduled activities.

Combining Rwanda Gorilla Trekking with Uganda

The safari can also form part of a longer Uganda and Rwanda journey.

Travelers can cross into southwestern Uganda for additional mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda also offers chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park, wildlife safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park and boat trips, birding and cultural experiences.

A combined Uganda–Rwanda itinerary is particularly attractive for travelers who want both primate encounters and traditional African wildlife viewing.

Why Book a 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Mount Bisoke Safari?

This itinerary delivers two outstanding adventures without requiring a long holiday. Gorilla trekking introduces you to one of the world's rarest great apes at remarkably close range, while Mount Bisoke reveals the scale and beauty of the volcanic landscape that provides their habitat.

Private transportation removes much of the logistical difficulty. Accommodation can be tailored to your preferred budget, while permit arrangements and park activities can be coordinated in advance. The result is a compact safari with remarkably diverse experiences packed into three days.

Plan Your 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Mount Bisoke Safari

Our 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla & Mount Bisoke Safari can be customized according to your travel dates, accommodation preference, arrival point and wider East African itinerary.

The most important step is confirming gorilla permit availability for your intended trekking date. Once permits are secured, accommodation, transfers and the Mount Bisoke hike can be arranged around your schedule.

Whether this is your entire Rwanda holiday or one part of a longer Uganda and Rwanda safari, combining mountain gorillas with Mount Bisoke offers an exceptional introduction to the Virunga Mountains.
