Day 01
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
Meet your driver-guide at your Kigali hotel, Kigali International Airport or another agreed location. After introductions, begin the scenic journey north toward Musanze. The road leaves Kigali and travels through Rwanda’s famous hilly countryside.
Cultivated slopes, villages and valleys characterize much of the journey. As you approach Musanze, the Virunga volcanoes become an increasingly dominant feature of the landscape. Weather permitting, several dramatic peaks may be visible above the surrounding farmland.
Arrival and Check-In
Arrive at your selected lodge near Volcanoes National Park and check in. Accommodation can be arranged in budget, mid-range or luxury categories. Enjoy lunch or refreshments before spending the afternoon at leisure.
Unlike very short gorilla tours, this itinerary allows you to arrive in the park region well before trekking day. You can therefore rest, enjoy the mountain atmosphere and prepare your equipment.
Optional Afternoon Experience
Depending on your arrival time and interests, an optional community, cultural or scenic activity may be arranged. Alternatively, remain at the lodge. Your guide will brief you about the following morning.
Prepare hiking boots, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, gardening gloves and waterproof protection. Get a good night’s rest before the gorilla trek. Accommodation: Volcanoes National Park/Musanze region Meal Plan: According to package

Day 02
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Wake early and enjoy breakfast. Transfer to the designated park briefing point. Visitors register before attending a detailed gorilla trekking briefing.
Rangers explain how the trek operates and outline the regulations used to minimize disturbance to the gorillas. Visitors are then allocated to habituated gorilla families. The precise starting point depends on the family assigned.
Transfer to the trailhead with your guide.
Trek through the Virunga Habitat
Enter the mountain environment with professional trackers and ranger guides. The route can pass through farmland before reaching bamboo and forest vegetation. Mountain gorillas range freely.
There is therefore no fixed distance or duration for the trek. A gorilla family may be relatively close to the trailhead or several hours away. Recent rain can make the slopes muddy and slippery.
Porters are available and highly recommended. They can carry your backpack and help with difficult sections.
Finding the Gorilla Family
Trackers use their experience and knowledge of recent gorilla movements to find the assigned family. As you move closer, your ranger may ask you to reduce noise and prepare your camera. Eventually, dark shapes begin appearing through the vegetation.
Seeing a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat is completely different from observing an animal in captivity. There are no cages or viewing platforms. You are entering the forest environment where the family lives.
One Remarkable Hour
Under standard gorilla trekking rules, visitors normally spend up to one hour with the habituated family once it has been located. A dominant silverback may remain nearby while females feed and youngsters play. You may watch juveniles climb bamboo, infants hold onto their mothers and adults groom or rest.
The subtle interactions within the family are often just as memorable as the size of the silverback. Photography is allowed, but flash should not be used. Remain calm and listen closely to instructions from the ranger throughout the encounter.
Return to the Lodge
After your viewing period, begin trekking back to the trailhead. Meet your driver and return to your lodge. Take a hot shower, enjoy lunch or refreshments and spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing.
Depending on the trekking duration, a light optional activity may be possible, but many travelers prefer to rest and reflect on the experience. Accommodation: Volcanoes National Park/Musanze region Meal Plan: Breakfast, packed lunch where appropriate and dinner

Day 03
Musanze to Kigali
Enjoy a more relaxed breakfast. Depending on your preferred departure time and final itinerary, an optional morning activity may be arranged. This can provide another opportunity to experience northern Rwanda beyond gorilla trekking.
Later, check out and begin the drive back to Kigali. Enjoy the scenery of Rwanda’s hills and farming communities as you travel south. Arrive in Kigali and transfer to your hotel, airport or another agreed destination.
This concludes your 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Safari.

Good to Know
Practical notes on timing, permits, routes and extensions for this safari.
Why Choose Three Days?
Three days is often an excellent balance for a short Rwanda gorilla trip. You avoid having to travel from Kigali and trek on the same morning. You also have time to recover from the trek before returning.
This makes the trip suitable for travelers who want a short itinerary without the intensity of a one-day excursion.
Gorilla Trekking Permit
A valid gorilla permit is required. Visitor numbers are restricted around each habituated family. Permit availability should therefore be checked before confirming accommodation.
Popular travel periods can attract strong demand. Early booking provides the widest choice of dates.
Is Gorilla Trekking Difficult?
The physical difficulty varies from day to day. Factors include the location of your assigned gorilla family, weather, elevation and trail conditions. Some visitors experience a moderate trek, while others may walk for several hours.
A reasonable level of fitness is useful.
Porters
Porters can be hired at the trekking starting points. They can carry your backpack and assist on steep or muddy sections. Hiring a porter is recommended even if you consider yourself fit.
It reduces unnecessary strain and supports local income associated with tourism.
What to Wear
Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip. Long trousers and long sleeves provide protection from vegetation. Carry a waterproof jacket because rainfall can occur at any time in the mountains.
Gardening gloves are useful when holding vegetation for balance.
What to Bring
Recommended items include:
- Small daypack
- Water
- Camera
- Spare batteries
- Rain jacket
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen
- Hat
- Trekking documentation
Your lodge or safari arrangements can provide guidance on meals and drinking water.
Accommodation
Musanze and the Volcanoes National Park area offer accommodation for a wide range of budgets. Value-conscious travelers can choose simpler lodges, while mid-range properties provide greater comfort. Luxury lodges offer premium rooms or suites, excellent dining and personalized service.
We select accommodation according to your budget and preferred travel style.
Best Time for a Rwanda Gorilla Safari
Gorilla trekking takes place throughout the year. Comparatively drier months are popular because trails may be easier to negotiate. However, the Virunga region can receive rainfall during any month.
The wetter seasons create particularly lush mountain scenery.
